Had a scan through the list this morning and a chap I used to work with has entered it this year for the first time.

It's interesting because I have known him for 13 years and I know the truth about his past, which bears little relationship to what is printed about him. In point of fact whenever I have seen news reports about him over the past decade they have been quite "creative".

When I knew the guy he was struggling because his staff thought he was uncharismatic and a bullstter. But today he is worth many millions of pounds. Knowing how he created his wealth (divorcing news print from fact) it is seems that it is in no small part due to his ability to make stuff up and then keep repeating it until people believe it.

None of this is to detract from his success, he has done well and I take my hat off to him. But knowing how different the truth is from what is printed it makes me wonder just how different from the truth are the success stories of the other 999 people on the list.

It was the headline on the front page on the main paper that made me laugh.

"Britains super rish get richer by 30% whilst the rest of the country suffer, most rises due to stock market and property"

So what you seem to have forgotten is these are the same people that lost 30% when the stock market went to the wall...

And I thought the Times was above such sensationlist headlines...

I've heard the same story about many wealthy people - and many actually end up believing their stories themselves, which I think is kind of sad. but hey!... whatever gets you through the day right?!

Anyway... I dont have access to this list... where is Bernie?

The two people on the list I know personally have. as far as I know, behaved exactly as they are said to have done by the press...not sure of their positions this year as haven't seen the paper...they were 297th and 304th last year. One of them is a really top bloke.

EFA. no idea where those figures came from, corrected now

a friend of mine has been in the list for a long time. (her family business that is!). She finds this fact very amusing. As all, or most, of their wealth is tied up in the company!
On a personal note, I have known her for over 30 years and she is one of the hardest working people I know. Although she is not involved in the day to day running of the company (her cousin does that!) she is very involved in strategic decisions and takes her responsibilities very seriously.
She also does an amazing amount of charity work, giving her time and her running efforts to raising funds as well as her cash!

I am sure there are many people on there who get a kick out of seeing their wealth emblazoned in print, but most of the wealthy people I know/have known are more interested in keeping it quiet and getting on with their lives.

I don't really have much interest in what other people have, it's what I've got that matters to me.

The adverts are all high end chamagne lifestyle stuff, which begs a question do the rich check to see if there in?

Some terrible grammar in that sentence.

I guess the type of people interested enough to buy it will be the right kind of audience for that kind of advertising...

I suspect the discrepancies with this particular chap are entirely down to him, rather than poor journalism. He claims to have been employed in roles he never did for firms he never worked for.

Online from 2nd May, if you want it before then you'd best get down to the newsagent before the end of the day.

The list is made up mainly of guesstimates. I'd take it with a pinch of salt - used to make for an interesting read though.
