Classic lemans ferry crossing...recommendations?

Hi everyone

Insted of our regular leman24hr trip we're trying out the classic insted.....we also want to try out a different crossing as well, what with rising petrol costs, toll roads, french coppers and old cars not enjoying the long trip. So was thinking Portsmouth/le harve or portsmouth/caen? Can any one recommend who to go with regards ticket purchasing and which is the better crossing and for why? I need to sort these pretty quick now, sorted all leman camping stuff with 1st tickets ages ago but forgot all about ferries...d'oh!

A lot of people use the Newhaven / Dieppe crossing, overnight leaves about midnight and lands about 6 am from memory, then its not far down to LM, cabins available at very reasonable cost as well so a half decent nights sleep into the bargain.

We got a good rate from them in 2006, about £40 return if I recall, plus £20 per cabin which slept 4 so absolute peanuts.

Portsmouth - le Havre will be LD lines, Caen will be Brittany Ferries . BF are generally much dearer than LD, but the boats are bigger with more facilities. Distance to le Mans - not much in it. You gain 2 hours on a Calais crossing.
Those crossings start getting expensive when you book cabins.

We are doing the Portsmouth - Le Havre crossing, using the CAT, about half the time so no cabin required
Booked last year so prices were cheep, not sure what they charge now or if room still available.

I never even thought about that crossing...I'll add it to the investigation list along with the le harve crossing, cheers mate

We're not mega fussed about cabin to kip in, we'll happily get five minutes sleep anywhere.....if it can be done track side then it can be done in any conditions lol

The BOG Club will be on the Vomit Comet from Portsmouth to Le Havre on the Wednesday morning, returning Monday evening...

We have a great run planned on D roads all the way down, as we do every year - different routes each time as much as possible. Stay well away from the autoroutes and N roads (and the coppers)...
