What am I doing wrong??
Discussion
Got my car sorted, a 1990 1.4 Astra worth all of £200. Got my test on Friday and, due to gigs with the band, really need to get on the road as soon as possible (hoping I pass ofc
).
However, going to GoCompare etc the absolute cheapest quote I'm getting (saying already passed so on full uk) is...
£4586
Had been planning to use Quinn but what's happened with them after the whole administration stuff? Because the car's 20 years old now is there any way I'd be able to argue it as a classic and get a classic policy?
Any help very gratefully received

Try ringing the company direct or using there own website, you'll be amazed by how much the difference can be, even if its the same company.
I've found admiral to be the cheapest (I only passed a year ago and am 18), set it to a low millage with the highest excess you can afford, oh and if you can add an older driver (preferably one with lots of no claims).
I got mine down from £3500 (quoted by admiral) on a comparison site to £1500 direct from admrial.
Good luck

If the car is worth less than £500, go third party only.. This should bring the cost right down.
Limit the mileage on the policy, and add your Mother as a named driver.
Agreed with the third party, and milage. Adding parents doesnt always bring the policy price down, and will often put it up but it is worth a go.Limit the mileage on the policy, and add your Mother as a named driver.
Double check you've entered everything correctly, as little ticked boxes for instance may make a big difference.
Also, try confused.com, I got founf my insurance to be £300 ish cheaper from them compared to the same company on compare the market, and go compare. (£800 - £1100) worth a try.

Tried moneysupermarket, 4787 cheapest
Already putting my mum on policy, limiting mileage to 5000 a year, doing third party fire & theft so I'll try third party now
I know the area that a person lives in makes a difference, but does it go on the general postcode or the specific one?
I've found its the general postcode, i live in LS19, a good 20 minute drive from leeds city, and in a small town but the price is still high compared to areas I have lived before (south of surrey).

I have always found price comparison sites a waste of time for young people, they do you for every penny you have.
Try going direct to: Direct line, Churchil and Tesco (entering club card details knocked off about £50 off my current price)
These are the three insurers ive been with and have always had the lowest quotes. My most expensive insurance was on my corsa worth about £3k fully comp for £1250 at the age of 17 with DL.

HTH
Can someone clarify whether Quinn are actually doing new policies or not?
Just went through the rigmarole of entering details only to be told they're not doing online quotes?Insurance is a black art, and sometimes the car itself can be a barrier. At 21 I was paying under a grand to insure a Mondeo Mk1 V6, it had 175 BHP (allegedly) and was s
te. However it was insurance group 16.
I am now paying MORE to insure a 1.8 BMW in a lower group, even though I now have extra no claims bonus. The same was true of my Volvo, which cost nothing to insure even though it was a high group.
I'd suggest running a few different cars through the box. You'll be surprised. If something comes out significantly cheaper, which it may well, ditch the Astra and put the money towards that instead.
Think about diesels too; they're cheaper to insure than petrols and offer greater performance to cost ratio. A 306 D-Turbo is a hell of a lot quicker than the 1.4 and less t insure, for example.

Footman James will give a classic policy at 17. I paid £650 TPFT on a 1992 Mini Cooper in my own name etc with them.
From their website:No-one who will drive the vehicle on this insurance:
• Is under 25 years of age.
I think I'm just going to have to phone around tomorrow. Out of interest, are local brokers usually better or worse money wise?

Realistically, would it be possible to get anywhere near that from doing it over the phone?
