Mother in law found an old silver ladel/spoon amongst her family junk box. It seems to be hall marked but doesn't correspond to any of the assay offices. Her family came from Indian after the war but the layout seems western, so they may have teklne it there when they went there in the 19th century from Scotland. The symbols are:

Shield with what looks like a broad letter H with a narrowing tower through the middle (not the Newcastle or Edinburgh towers)

A circle with a 6 pointed star.

A circle with the letter S

A circle with the symbol &

A circle with the letter J

Does this help?

http://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/

Look under the 'S' section under each area and they've got pictures of what the various marks look like.

I had already done that but the letters are in different circles and most makers marks are in a single box/circle etce

Possibly so, but if that is the town assay mark, they tended to use symbols, not letters. Unless that is the makers mark, the star is the townn mark and the others are date letters?

Looking at the various makers marks fromm across assay offices they tend not to be in this ornate overlapping A/H or H/A format, but are simple letters in a square box.
