Ive just sold (hopefully...) my 928 on ebay smile

Now the car currently has my private plate on it which i wish to keep (i made this clear in the description as a condition of the sale)

Ive had a look on the DVLA site but didnt think it was too clear. Basically i want to keep the plate but im not sure what the drill is and what forms the new keeper/myself? will need to fill in. Anybody have any experience of this?

Thanks

Alex

Have a look at this

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/PersonalisedR...

You'll need to take all the relevant docs to the DVLA, whole process should take approx 3 weeks, with confirmation of new reg number within aprox 1 week.

If your having the new owner do this for you, make sure you get it in writing and take a copy of some sort of ID with their home address on it, know of a dealer who when buying cars off people for stock, has a tendency to promise to take plate of and then "forget".............adding a little bit more to his profit!

I think you have to get the new plate put on before you hand over the V5 or trust the buyer not to keep the private plate or something.

Someone will be along shortly with the definitive answers...

Edit - there you go lol

Hi, thanks guys.

Just spoken to the buyer, sounds ok, i suspect he may be a dealer but was fine about the plate situtation.

He has asked me to skan the logbook to him and subject to HPI check (which i know will be fine as i did one when i bought the car) he should be collecting by the end of the week.

You're lucky. I know a few people who've lost plates when trying to transfer after they've handed over the logbook. Even to dealers!

As has been said i'll get something in writing off him too but he said its no problem and he may put one on when mine comes off, two birds and all that. The plate isn't a valuable one, it's just my initials, but it does have sentimental value to me (it was my 17th birthday present off my Dad)

V317 to retain your reg
Its best if you do this before you sell the car
You cant do it afterwards but if you trust the buyer they can transfer it back to you. I'm not sure how that works with dealers as they're not officially buyers (they dont appear as a keeper) so you may need to wait until an offical buyer is found.
There is a way that the registration can be transfered back straght away after sale using the above V317 and a V62 ( reg doc not present) but again the dealer isnt really a buyer.
Best to transfer it first and delay selling the car - they'll wait if they really want it

Sounds like you've got it sorted then. My best mate had a cheap plate, but was a 21st present. Which he lost! His Brother then got one for his 21st, which he then lost in exactly the same way !! The dealer let the MOT lapse, and wouldn;t tax the car to allow the plate to come off. frown

all i know is thats it fecking nonsense. we're trading a car in for a 'new' used car at a main dealer. New car needs to be insured before reg transfer can happen?!? I've been told...

Our existing car has a private plate, so that car needs a new reg, the new car needs my reg on it and it's current reg put on retainer/thrown away/lost in the system etc. So what should be a fairly easy process is now taking 'at least' 4 weeks!!!

Unless you have another car you want to transfer the reg to, you will have to pay a retention fee to keep the number (yes, yes, I know you've already bought it, but the DVLA will take it back off you unless you pay the fee), from memory £80-£130 for 12-36 months.

Your old car normally gets it's old reg # back.

If you retain the plate, they'll issue you with a certificate which you then submit when you have chosen your new car. You then have to :

send in your tax disc, and MOT, and V5, and your transfer Cert. (You need to do this to get the old reg back on your car being sold, then again for the car you have bought when you get the V5 back.) Then inform your insurance, breakdown, warranty, tracker, etc, of your new license plate.

The first bit of the above (the DVLA bit), you can do over a counter at your local office. (Mine is in Nottingham.)
