VW Golf GT TDi - Anyone got one?
Discussion
Good Afternoon guys,
Anyone have one of these, or driven one?
Looking to buy one, and keep the Z4 for the weekends. I was originally looking at the Astra sports with the exterior packs, but then the GT TDi caught my eye..
My approx budget is £7-8k. And having owned an Audi in the past, I was hoping the golf would exude a better fit/finish/build quality than Any other brand in the market (Including the 1-series).
I have written off the 1-series as the rear leg space is abysmal (My mother is disabled and need space for her)
Regards

I had one now for about a year. Its not a bad car on the whole, suspension is just right - not too hard or soft, however it does feel very nose heavy and understeers a lot in the wet. Engine pulls well and it great for commuting though no sports car.
I do 140 km's each day in mine, 70% motorway - its a great car for that - however my biggest gripe is the noise at higher speed - its pretty noisy , I'm not sure if its coming from the tires or the transmission. I shall be looking to get something quieter for the commute once I can afford it (330d m sports).

The new Kias are better built than the Golf, so I expect you will be very disappointed
ks!The highest quality item in a VW Golf is the associated marketing.
I own a Bora TDi Sport 130 which is basically a MK4 Golf with a boot and I would say quality wise they are fantastic, interior feels and looks nice the engine has always been reliable and plenty powerful for what it is, If you're looking at a MK4 platform then the Golf or Bora is the way to go.
On the other hand I would NOT go MK5 as when I had a look at a couple the interior was a let down in quality and looks compared to the MK4, feels like VW when on one hell of a cost cutting mission when designing the MK5.
Contrary to what people will tell you on this forum VW's are better than MX-5's and chipped 335d's its the truth.

My partner has a GT TDi (140BHP) as a company car, and 6 months after collection I'm still impressed by the fun I can have driving it.
It's a well balanced and sure footed car both in the wet and the dry, and it powers out of the roundabouts a treat.
Build quality seems fine - nothings broken off yet.
Just my 2p worth

These look astonishing value. Leather, climate etc for sub -£7khttp://www.evanshalshaw.com/vehiclesearch/used/vol...
Had a mk4 GT tdi 130 in the family for 7 years now.
It's done 210,000 miles in that time, and tbh after a polish and a hoover, it could get away with blagging it's done half that.
Hasn't developed squeaks or rattles, the drivers seat still looks like it was new. The only bad bit about it, are the wheels, which the paint have come off, but they could be refurbed very cheaply.
Would definately recommend one to anyone, good at munching up motorway miles, economical and it goe's alright if you keep feeding it gears to keep it in it's power range.

I have a MK5 GT Sport TDI
I've had it since brand new.
Nothing's fallen off or broken with the exception of an occasional rattle from behind the centre air vents. Apart from that, it feels solid and well made.
It's fast enough and handles well enough. It'll not set one's pants on fire but it's a Golf - it's not really designed to.
I've had 1 service in 30k miles (it's due another soon) The only non-service items I've had to change are tyres, 1 set of wiper blades and a puncture repair. Easy.
I'm very pleased with it - so much so that I'm going to keep it when the initial 3 year finance agreement runs out this year.

I had a Mk4 GT TDI (130) as a company hack about 5 years ago.
From new I felt it was very well build and things felt quality. Certainly opposed to the Focus which was the other option I was given. Engine had plenty of poke, but it was all delivered in one smash in the back of the head, rather then any progression.
Aged ok, i did 63k in mine and there were only a few signs of my time in the car. From experience and seeing others the steering wheel goes very very shiney very quickly. Its a very soft leather which seemed to deteriorate much quicker than on other cars.
Interestingly i now drive a 1 series, which I think is better in almost every single way. The only thing that lets it down is rear legroom, which i know you have already discounted this for that reason.

I find this very difficult to accept. You must have had a lemon. As i said, i have driven one, and do not recognise the car you are describing at all.The Ceed is leagues ahead of the Civic in terms of build quality, materials, durability, etc. The Ceed has fully independent multilink rear suspension, the Civic has torsion bars, and you can tell. I haven't driven a quashqui, but your comments about the Astra/Bravo/Civic/Megane/etc just beggar belief.
The Golf has a few more soft touch plastics, and the driving position is a bit better. The Focus handles better.
In all other areas i'd take the Kia. We are talking about 1.6 boggo family wagons here, and it's by far the best of them.
In the search for a diesel mile muncher, I tried a Bora TDi, a Vectra CDTI and my current Focus TDCI. The bora was ok but seemed very small inside and had lots of creaks and rattles, the engine was loud and agricultural compared to the focus. The vectra was a nicer place to sit and felt like it had done half the miles of the bora (both had done 85k miles or so)
In the end I went for the focus as it had done half the miles, felt better put together, it was quieter and was a more comfortable ride. It also feels quicker than the other 2 and less boring to look at. I'd make the same dicsion again tomorrow aswell.
