I have this on my policy:

"we will cover you, the
policyholder, for your liability to other people while you are driving any
other privately owned vehicle which you do not own or have not hired under
a hire-purchase or lease agreement as long as:

Does not belong to you or your employer
Is not hired or leased by you or your employer
Is not a van, or a car van, or a jeep type vehicle
You currently hold a full EU licence
The use of the vehicle is covered on the certificate of insurance
Cover is not provided by any other insurance
You have the owner’s permission to drive the vehicle
The vehicle is in a roadworthy condition and
You still have your vehicle and it is not been damaged beyond cost
effective repair."

Im assuming an EU licence is just the pink photocard licence thing?

and when it says "cover is not provided by any other insurance" does that mean for example I couldnt drive my dads Alfa as he has a separate policy with another company? - resulting in me only being able to drive vehicles that arent insured at all?

the bit about no other cover is that you do not have an insurance policy to drive the vehicle, ie your not a named driver on a policy to drive the vehicle.

That rule only applies to vehicles which ARE insured, as every vehicle has to have a policy taken out to be driven on the road.

Thats what I thought.. as long as I am not a named driver on say, my dads car, I can drive it 3rd party from my policy. The wording to me seems a bit obscure, but then again I was once told by a previous insurance company I could drive 3rd party cars while I was a named driver, but this was found to be wrong - I was given incorrect information and I had been driving a few times with no insurance! Just want to be extra careful and make sure I am legit!

That's not true you can drive a vehicle under the DOC on your own insurance without the vehicle having it's own cover on most insurance policies. It's all down to the wording of the drivers policy.
