Just looking for some information from some more 'clued up' PH users.

Colleague in work had an accident in his car over the weekend where both his offside tyres blew at what he said was about 10mph.

He is saying that he never hit any potholes or anything, and that they just blew, and now the car is looking like a right off.

A few guys in work were questioning the chances of both tyres blowing at the same time.

Is this possible or is my colleague covering up a bad smash?

Cheers

Craig

How much of a poor driver do you have to be to crash at 10mph due to two flat tyres?

And for that crash at 10mph to be so bad to write off a car?!

Makes no sense.

But to answer your question, the probability of two simultaneous blowouts is for practical purposes - absolutely zero.

the probability of a tyre "just blowing up" are virtually nil. If the tyre was already damaged then it is possible, but there would probably need to be something to trigger it, like a pothole or clipping something.

Chances of both tyres blowing at the same tyre is even less likely, and agreed with previous posters, bad smash at 10mph? Sounds like driver has had a crash, noticed both OS tyres had blown in the crash, and blamed the crash on the tyres, despite his very safe speed of 10mph.

If the tyres had blown BEFORE the crash, there would be very visible spid marks along the bit of road leading up to the crash. But at 10mph the car would be near enough controlable and stop almost immediately....

This

I expect he was playing with his mobile (or just not paying attention) went off the road, popped two tyres when he went over the curb and crashed into something.
It would be literally impossible to lose control of your car with a blow out at 10mph.

i could possably see

cornering hard, both outside tyres hit something in the road, big enough to cause instance loss of pressure (lump of concrete). car then understeers into whatever it was steering into

however, it'd have to have been mighty close to said object already, as a car with 2 flats will stop within about 8' if you're not on the gas - hence why police love stingers

so to answer your question. yes he's covering something up. I expect he hit a curb at high speed then something else more substancial

I had a front tyre let go at 60 mph on a car that I had just collected. There was no drama, just a thudding noise which I initially thought was a driveshaft fault. I came to a slow controlled stop at the side of the road, changed the wheel and continued my journey, the worst thing that happened was that I burnt my hand on the hot tyre.

Two tyres at 10 mph causing an accident, I find hard to beleive. When were they last checked?

I meant to add that it was a totally straight road that is supposedly happened on.
But thanks very much to everyone who replied.

Indeed we can haha!

I know hes not got a clue about cars, so we thought about the state of the tyres, but as people have said, at 10mph, surely a write off couldnt be the end result.

Ah well laugh

I once had a blowout at 95, hit the central reservation & pretty much destroyed the drivers side
of the hire car I was driving.

It turned out that the previous hirer had kerbed it badly & created a blister
on the sidewall, which unfortunately gave out on me frown

I would say the only possibility is that he shreddeed them on some glass he did not see.

Failing that, is your friend the "where there is blame" type people?
