Be interested to hear what people recommend too.

Had a quick look at a Specialized Nimbus Armadillo but they're £25 each and i dont know if they justify this or whether there's other alternatives?

I've been using Conti Gator Skins, and would very much recommend them. (I think this it what they're called, I haven't looked at them in a good while. wink )

Currently using 20mm version of these. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Mod...
Can't remember the last time I had a puncture.
Read the reviews. They are priced well too.
Put them on and forget about them.
Obviously keep them between 110 - 120 psi and you shouldn't have any problems.

ETA: Forgot to put in link.

Something I'm looking at too.

After a recommendation here, I'm checking on the Bontranger Hardcases. All the reviews seem good.

If they were pinch flats it maybe you should move up a size as well (e.g. up from 20mm to 23mm)

I ran Conti Gatorskins through from Jan to March and they only lasted 6 weeks!! Before the inner tube was literally “bubling” through the tyre on both tyres in several places!!!

I didn’t get a puncture at all during this time, but I wasn’t impressed with £60 of tyre only lasting less than two months (I ran them at 100-120 psi). But I think it was my fault, I got caught out on a ride and had to cut through a very badly maintained private road for 3 miles and this caused them to tear slightly.

I went back to the shop and they said they were the “toughest” tyres on the market.

They then found they do a “hard shell” version which offers extra protection on the sidewalls, so I bought these and after 2 months they seem good. No punctures and due to my commute I regularly have to cycle over smashed glass from bus shelters and bottles on a few times a day. They stand up to puncture causing material very well, but like any tyre take your time fitting them.

I would recommend the “Hard Shell” Gator Skins: the roads around me are a complete state, its all great saying avoid the pot holes, sometimes on some back roads, its impossible when the whole road is covered with craters, and you have an artic pulling in from an overtake!

I can thoroughly recommend these. I rode most of last season on them, including London to Paris. Awesome.

On one day there were 5 out of 7 of us who had punctures... not me smile

Great puncture resistance, fast enough for most and good all weather grip. My friend reckons the Conti 4 seasons is better in the wet though.

Here apparently, just going to get some so long as p&p doesn't add £16.

£4 P&P so not too bad and a £12 saving on a pair!

Thanks for that smile (too late for this time), do they look at P&P as well or do they offer a straight price match. Unfortunately/fortunately I no longer live near an Evans but am up in London once or twice a month.

What width tyres do you guys use for the Road/tarmac? Is there a lot of difference if i buy the 25mm over the 23mm?

I'm slightly different in that I run a 23 front & 25 rear on a very rigid alu frame. I'm quite heavy and strong so the wider rear helps with ride, power transfer & traction. If you have a carbon frame and are under say 14.5 stone I wouldn't bother unless you have significant traction issues under load in terms of different sizes fr to rear.

I'm a pretty heavy bloke too and the road tyres are going on a specialized hardrock pro, so i can see me going with a 25mm tyre at least. ^^^^Very interesting info though, cheers!
