Due to various mergers etc I somehow ended up as a member of the Unite Union. This was begining to annoy me when I found out the extent of their support for Labour. So much so that I had started considering cancelling my membership. Then last night they made my decision easy, I got a load of ste through the post telling me why I MUST vote Labour and how the Conservatives would destroy everthing!! Piss was boiling, membership now cancelled!! s!

Um, do you not understand how and why the Union movement came into being? You're being very naive.

I do, but I didn't take kindly to them almost dictating to me how I should vote.

The press did make a bit of this whole Unite / Labour funding thing recently, but its all gone very quiet. Not sure why, but I would view this as critical.

I don't see the heads of JCB and Next telling their employees to vote conservative - yet its perfectly acceptable for the Unions to do so. And this is just the stuff in writing - wait until the union reps start 'canvasing' for votes. Been there and done that - a local union rep a few years basically threatened me unless I voted Labour.....

Bloody joke.

Unite = Labour = Unite = labour = Unite, repeat until reality sinks in.

Unite are a political party as much as a union to represent the (long term*) interests of their workers and teh Labour party is so far in debt to Unite for funding it that it is as much a part of that trade union as it is a political party.

  • Short term; it's easy to brow beat unsustainable employment conditions from businesses. Long term; not attempting to co-operate with managment and looking at the bigger picture nearly always ends in tears as the jobs go overseas.

How they came into being and what they have become are quite different.

I would do the same as the OP, but with a covering letter explaining that I can make up my mind about my own political choices and do not wish for my work/trade union to try and influence me to vote for a load of self serving, corrupt, inept, pathetic cunch of bunts as the Labour Party. I might even try to make the letter read like an acrostic poem like Arnie did not long ago. hehe

Around Reading there are these nice posters of axes, indicating what dire future awaits should the Conservatives get in. I thought they were Labour posters.

No. They were Unison. Or Unite, one of the two. Not sure why they should be sticking their oar in?

That's what I thought. But then again, I looked but I couldn't see any posters from the actual Labour party themselves.

Mind you, you couldn't miss the enormous Conservative posters of Winky all over the place. Much more impressive than the poxy bus-stop axes. hehe

They probably can;t afford any, whereas Unite can (dip into their membership's coffers, at will).

See my post above re: Unite & Labour for explanation of motive.

And what they've become? What are you talking about? Without the unions there wouldnt be a labour party. By paying Union fees you (or the OP if you prefer) actually support the labour party. The unions have always supported Labour and always funded them, and always campaigned on their behalf.

Where do you think the term 'Labour' in Labour Party came from? Did none of you do any modern history classes in school?

Look it up if you dont understand:

I don't think this is unusual. My mrs is a nurse and on training courses where they discuss ongoing issues it has been discussed that they will all be voting Labour. This is because a vote for the Tories would mean they all lose either their jobs or opportunities for further education/training. Or at least, this is how they are being brainwashed.

Boils my piss and we actually managed to have a row about it the other day.

Sorry, I moved out of London 7 years ago, please don't tell me he is still around?? Will he be organising strikes to coincide with the Olympics by any chance??

I actually think Tories should have pictures of this twunt on their posters if they want to dissuade people from voting Labour/Union joint government. 7 years and I still have so much distain for someone I never actually met, a truly remarkable man.

Have a look on You Tube for Bob Crow on "Have I Got News for You". Utter, pointless relic from a less enlightened age.

This is the point. The public sector is just a continuation of the indoctrinated schools we have now.

The vast majority of the people in the public sector are too fking thick to work out they're being played like banjos.

I had forgotten about that, I did see it at the time and whilst his (mostly) self induced humiliation was amusing, if he is still Secretary of the RMT, I suspect he is still having the last laugh. Certainly eight years communting on the District Line meant it wasn't me laughing, that is for sure.

They have every right to promote their own vested interests for future rule.

It is up to the individual to be either 'selfish' or 'selfless' and vote accordingly.

The problem you faced though was really do you want to assist in this promotion of the labour party and by the looks of it you don't and you did exactly the only course open to you, pull out of funding of a party you have no allegiance to.

I applaud your stand, perhaps even more so as it was taken on the here and now situation without [perhaps] the full knowledge of the unions past and continuing position politically.

A selfless act in the final analysis.
