So the Mrs uses the MX as her daily driver. I have received an e-mail which says:
"The car is making an interesting noise. It sound like the suspension as it is whenever I go over a bump and the car bounces. It sounds like maybe something is rubbing together? The car drives fine no problems breaking or anything and I couldn’t see anything wrong with it. "

What do you think it will be!

I've gone for the exhaust option though if she's anything like my missus there could be a wheel missing and she wouldn't notice much other than a bit of noise biglaugh

Fingers crossed it's the exhaust. The votes for broken coilover are worrying!

You left one thing off the poll - it could be your missus' spelling ability (un;ess she did mean 'breaking!')

I put undertray, but I've had two broken springs (a front and a rear) - but they didn't seem to walk anywhere near anything rotating, and they'd been like it for a while judging by the rust in the break (of the coils that is).

What I want to know is, how did she hear this rubbing amongst all the other noises a Mk 1 makes- like rattling trim/noisy tappets/loose heatshields etc. etc. !!

I taught her well. All the noises are catalogued and understood. So new ones get reported.

On that front the heat shield rattle did come back a week or so ago.....which adds more weight to the exhaust idea I guess...

scratchchin Ok then it's none of the above as far as I can tell. It sounds like an asthmatic owl is hidden under the bonnet when you go over a bump. Like a hollow knock from the front some place.

There is some slight staining of the dirt around the "adjustment rings" on the front coil overs but I'm not convinced it's fresh oil as if they were leaking.

Nothing on full lock or "weaving" but using the brakes seems to dampen it some times...

Suspension bush? Engine/gearbox mount? Whatever it is we're going to see if it gets worse before acting. Because I don't fancy the chat with the garage (err yeh it's making a odd noise, not not that or that or that...the other noise...) hehe

I had a similarly confusing noise for a while... turned out the bonnet stay was popping out of its holder and flopping around. wink

Take a technician out in the car and get it to make the sound..

I love it when customers come into our department making noises though biggrin
