My MOT expires end of May. However, I am due a service middle of May. So I want to get the MOT done before the service in case anything needs doing.

I always believed it was the case that if I had it MOTd, for example, 5th May and it failed, I would still have a valid MOT cert until end of May and can therefore drive it around before getting stuff fixed. Is that the case?

I have tried checking the DVLA site, but it's an absolute shower of ste and I simply can't work out the answer!

Thanks smile

Correct, the MOT ticket will still be valid, as to whether the car is road legal or not is a different matter...

I think its a grey area, as you've been made aware of it.. But something like Emissions isn't going to be detremental to the safety of your vehicle.

I was told in my local MOT garage that if you have your car MOT'd in the month before the actual expiry and it fails then your old MOT is then invalid as your car is not road worthy.

I think theres a difference between whats recorded in the computer and the law.

If your car fails the computer will record your car as a failure and you could get pulled for no MOT by ANPR. Then you'd have to provide the MOT cert to show it still had time left on it. Assuming the car was actually safe and when pulled they didn't ticket you for it being dangerous.

Something like that anyway. (Easier if it doesn't fail!)

Your garage is wrong. Your MOT certificate is still valid.

This is correct (although I don't think the ANPR would pick up "no MOT in the first place - the old certificate remains valid till date of expiry.

They can pull you for the car being unroadworthy, and the fact that it had failed an MOT would make any defence that "you didn't know", very difficult - but you wouldn't be booked for "no MOT" - it's still valid.

Ah good stuff - thanks all, it's what I remembered but I just could not find it.

The car is fairly sound - 54 plate Audi with nothing unroadworthy in my eyes, I just didn't want to have something rubbish make it fail and then not actually be able to drive the car smile

Thanks!

Nothing grey about it. The original MOT is still valid and it will show as such on any checks made by the police or VOSA.

So if you get pulled on the way home and have a defect, your aware of that as it's failed the MOT.

I checked this with VOSA recently.

The old MOT remains valid. But obviously you are wide open if you drive with dangerous faults.
