I've received a letter which has someone else's name but my address.

I've lived here 4+ years, and the name isn't the person who lived here before. Do I phone them up and tell them they've never lived here, or just throw it away?

I got a collection letter once to my new address, name was wrong address was right. Quick phone call to the company to explain i don't know the person and they did not live here. They apologised and all is well.

Can't do any harm to call or email.

yes

Ring them up, say "Nowt to do with me" and they'll amend their records.

Job jobbed.

I did that after a few letters and they said "how do we know you are not him?"

And I continue to RTS the letters.

I had the same issue with the previous owner of our house.

I now open them and phone to say they no longer live there and refer them to the Solicitor they used when purchasing the house as obviously there is no forwarding address.

So far so good smile

This.

Of course the letter was opened in error along with your usual post before you realised it wasn't your name on the front I take it...

I've had so many of these for the waste of skin that used to own my house that I have a standard letter saved which I change the names and addresses on before sending to them.

What will happen if you are not careful is that the debt will be sold on and the new debt collectors will most likely ignore the fact the old ones were told they don't live there and will write again. Same approach.

Interestingly I had one from a certain building society with nationwide offices which was very threatening and suggested that they had a charge over my house to secure this blokes debt. No what you want to send in writing to a stroppy GOM of a property solicitor. After sending them both barrels I now have a letter practically oozing with apology, remorse and regret hehe

used to have that with the ex-owners, must have owed £100k to the bank, building society, HMRC, numerous credit cards, some of whom needed to be told to go fk themselves after being told that I don't know them, why not contact the solicitors who sold me the house and would still not understand....
