Hi all.

Been looking at e36 M3s which are now within my price range for a decent enough example (circa 6k).

Problem I believe I will have is getting insurance. I tried one comparison site and got "we were unable to provide a quote" for every result...

Before I waste my time phoning round, have any of you managed to get a competitive insurance quote with similar circumstances to mine?

I'm 24, have one non fault claim last year (someone reversed into me, full costs recovered from the other side), have 3 points (sp30) which will go over the 5 year threshold in 7 days, live in a decent postcode, have 4 (nearly 5) years no cliams, and a history of driving "sports" cars (if that even counts for antyhing).

Anyone have thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks

You should be able to get it with Elephant and related companies.

I got a quote off them for being 25, just passed a test for an M3. Ended up with a Z4, but they were both cars that BMW insurance wouldn't even cover me for the complimentary 7 days.

Try confused.com (I think they include elephant). Failing that, give A-Plan a call. They got me a good deal on mine.

Try a specialist insurer like Adrian Flux.

Either that or be patient until the points go, the 5th years no claims is in the bag, and maybe also until you pass 25.

I've a lot of sympathy for younger people trying to insure "proper" cars these days. The insurance seems insane compared to what I would have paid a decade ago as a proportion of my annual motoring costs.

Tut, sensible posts only please tongue out

Thanks for the help and suggestions everyone.

With regards to Adrian Flux - does ANYONE actually get good quotes with them? I always see their name pop up, every quote I've ever had with them has been +£500 to what I have actually ended up paying.

Will take a look at Elephant, thanks all.

I'm currently with Adrian Flux for two reasons. I'd previously been paying around £950 for my comprehensive cover on my M3 with a major insurer, which was competetive given the searches I'd done online, however my renewal came through at over £1200 for this year. This coincided with me planning to fit my AP brakes all round on my car, and I was keen to ensure that my car would be properly covered in its new modified form.

I called my current insurer to discuss my renewal quote with them as a "valued customer", having been with them for nearly 9 years, and then to discuss the addition of the APs. We didn't get to the second part of the dicussion as the abrupt woman on the phone wasn't interested in negotiating the renewal. "Your loss!", I replied, "Please send me proof of no-claims in the post and we'll call it a day then" - I cancelled the direct debit minutes later.

After a few online searchs and chats regarding modified cars, I actually concluded that my red phone policy wasn't actually too badly priced, then I tried Adrian Flux ..... I'm now covered with them with the brake modifications declared, for £750 a year!!! Happy days!

I'm 40 this year with a clean license and no accidents, and I can only get insurance on my £5k e36 M3 Evo if it has a tracker fitted. And I leave in a decent area. I've had no problems in the past insuring a £55k TVR Cerbera when I was just 30 years old! Madness. Anyway, try selecting it with a Tracker and see if you get offered the insurance. Remember that a Tracker will cost £200-300 to fit and that you need to keep the subs active each year - mines around £130. For comparison, I pay £550 with A-plan with a modified exhaust and an induction kit. So with the Tracker, that's £680. As I said, madness. Good luck.

Good point. A tracker will open up more policies. Mine doesn't have one though and my insurance is about 500.
