would you expect an airbag to go off if you hit a kerb sideways at speed?

if so, what is the minimum speed which would cause deployment?

I worked in the airbag industry for many years. A rough rule of thumb for a frontal airbag - did your face or torso contact the steering wheel? If no then the bag should not have deployed. If you managed to make hard contact with the steering wheel then the bag should have deployed.

In general about 5mph is the lower threshold but it is the change in velocity experienced by the occupant that is ultimately important. So glancing kerb strikes and the like should result in a no-fire.

Hope this helps.
