Great found out yesterday afternoon that I'm being sent to Stockholm for a conference on May 6th. Only snag is I hadn't expected to go and as a result didn't organise a postal vote or proxy vote. I should add that I live across the road from my local polling centre, but despite my good excuse and despite the fact that the proxy vote application only finished yesterday at 5pm ( I found out I was being sent at 4pm), the local council people have told me I'm not allowed to vote now, unless I can turn up in person. As this would mean leaving the conference early and rushing back from Heathrow at light speed to get to the polling station before 10pm on May 6th this isn't going to be easy.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this? My colleagues suggested writing to my MP!

....you are 'fecked.....I don't think you will get a proxy vote now.....I am still waiting for my postal vote and I applied as soon as I got my voting card......over two weeks now. I have checked that I am registered for a postal vote and if it does not come today or tomorrow I will be on the 'ol dog and bone again......last time I didn't get a postal vote for the local elections and I was fumimg especally as when I phoned to complain and said "well I am perhaps one of the few bloody people who want to vote" they terminated the conversation.......bunch of r'soles.

Probably not, it's good to excercise your right of a say on what happens when you feel strongly 1 way or another though

You can do a proxy vote for a particular election i.e. this one, it's only too late to do a proxy vote for any general / council election.

go onto the council website for where you live and follow links on 'voting' or 'electoral' matters and it will take you to the right form. That form has to be with the council 6 days before May 6th to be valid.

best way to let them know is to not vote anyway.

You've missed the deadline for postal voting. You either turn up in posting at your local polling station, or you don't vote at all.

Weird - I've been told 11 days for a proxy vote to ANY election, but if I specify I want it for this one then I have 6 days. This is for Plymouth - I have to do a proxy coz I'm stuck up in Scotland working.

Edited because I tried to quote the wrong quote! Muppet!

I've been in Angola for the last 3.5wks and I'm here until the end of May, so I missed all the cards, I missed the postal / proxy applications.
Looks like I won't be kicking Winky Mcfknuts down the road this year..... sorry all.

Is it illegal to let a friend vote for you?

Is this a bite? That's what voting by proxy means!

No, I mean unofficially. Just asking someone to turn up on your behalf. They don't exactly ask for ID!

I would imagine it is illegal, but what would the chances/penalties be of getting caught?
