Having read a load of posts on checking the oil for the Speed 6 people seem to have different opinions on having the engine on or off and screwing the cap in or just dipping it.(Surely this gives a different reading??)
So presuming the engine has been run at operating temperature and is on level ground what do we think. Let's answer this once and for all!

Someone a lot more intelligent than me will come along soon but you need to have the car on the flat, rev the car at 3K for 20 secs or something like that and then kill the engine. This will give you the correct reading.
Took my S6 out so I do not have this problem anymore though I will be using the dry sump tank.

i guess (i could be wrong, often am) we are really just talking about engine running or not as the difference between screwing on or not is i recon about 10mm max in dipstick travel and not much in it time wise, i check mine straight after killing the engine having opened the service bonnet first and screwing in. was always told to do it straight after stopping engine

have to say finding this bit of a mare too, did a reading this morning and hardly any oil showing which got me in a major panic then put just over half a litre in went for a drive and was reading too high! having just spoke to warren at topcats he did say they can be awkward but not to worry if too high or low would seem the dipstick is not an exact science!
After I got sick of switching off the engine and running to the front of the car as I listened to the oil gurgle back into sump pan I started doing it with the engine running
So - Warm engine ( Usually hot in my case - very few trips under 50 miles) leave ticking over, open bonnet and put to one side, unscrew cap, wipe with rag, tissue, tie etc, screw back in, unscrew and check.
Screw back in - stop engine and say - won't need any for a further 1000 miles or - I'll just pop an eggcupfull in
Put bonnet back in, lock car, go inside, drink beer.

I always found that I couldn't get any kind of sensible reading at all if I tried to do it with the engin still running.
This may be different depending on when the engine was built etc though?
So, if you can get a reading with the engine running then fine, otherwise turn it off and dash to the front quickly making sure you trip over/bump into any cables, sicks, cats, dogs, kids, wifes, girlfriends etc on your way
Most Important!!!
Remember to NOT wear gloves/use a cloth etc when taking off the cap so you get some nice burns on your fingers!
