Mods please dont move this as I'd appreciate a wider audience based on those that may have owned in the past.

Looking at older cars heart set on an e34 530/40 but head says consider other cars. Not looking to spend a lot this time so the petrols were working out good. High miles put me of diesels especially with the repair costs but seen a few decent spec diesels hence this thread

Just how long do BMW e39 525 and 530d's last? What major problems do they have and what should be looked out for? Seen a nice 2003 model but 122k on the clock but seriously what are you looking at problem wise? Water pumps? Fuel system? Turbos?

like that yes! That 530 looks like falling through, sent emails asking a few questions left number etc but its been dead quiet. Will chase tonigth but I was certain in todays depressed market that someone wanting to look at an old big CC car would seem like a god send to any trader? Hence now looking at other options

I had an ex plod white 530d with 68k on the clock. It was a bit reluctant to go into 3rd every now and again, but I bloody loved that car.

cheers, being ex-plod I'd have expected the 68k to have been rather spirited/hard

I don't know if it's a common thing, but my cousin has a 525d in the inlet manifold cracked at approx 120k.

Lovely car though, wouldnt mind one next myself. Quite boring to drive, but soaks up the miles on the motorway. The 6 cylinder diesels sound alright too, nothing like the 4 pots!

A mate of mine has a 530d 03 plate with 215,000 miles on it, still runs like a dream.

I was going to say avoid the older 525tds as the economy is poor but if you're looking at an 03 plate then they weren't in production then anyway.

I had a DM sport on 02 for 3 years and loved it, it didn't miss a beat. Did hear scarey stories about turbos going pop if not warmed up cooled down properly

We've got one
- we've had it from new (2001 / 51 Plate) - and LOVE it.

The Turbo was replaced under warrantee circa 20k. It didnt blow, but there was a very slightl whistle and BMW were happy to replace.

I also opted to have the Swirl Flaps removed from the inlet manifold.
Lots of BMW Diesels (both the 2.0 and 3.0) have sucked these through their engines writing them off - I didnt want to risk it. There was no noticable detremental effects in performance and no probs with emissions.

We love the car and have no plans to change it smile
