Had a test drive (well my Mum did) at a dealers on Saturday. She'd previously had a drive at different dealer and wasn't impressed with the service as amongst other things the trade plates were on the dash and reflecting in the windscreen which she found very distracting.

The point being she mentioned this to the second dealer and he was was telling us that they no longer use trade plates but permanently taxed/insured vehicles because trade plates, and I quote "only cover what's between them" so if you have one on the dash and stove in the bonnet it may not actually be covered - if they do use trade plates they make sure they are actually on the front of the car.

Is there any truth in this?

No, trade plates cover the vehicle for road tax, nothing to do with insurance

None whatsoever.

Trade plates cover tax but not insurance. They should be fitted to the front and back of the car though and not inside it.

Maybe there is a clause to use trade plates in convoy - one on the front of the front vehicle and one on the back of the tail vehicle ?

Reality dictates that this is not possible in the real world. I have not yet found a suitable solution to fixing plates on varying cars and mainly put them on the dash as they can't damage the cars so easily that way.

I can't believe someone wouldn't buy a car because of a misplaced trade plate though, that is truly ridiculous! I am sure there must be more to it than just that (I hope, for my sanity at least)

I might have worded things badly. The first dealer was a bit of a nightmare for various reasons, one of them being a trade plate sliding around the dashboard and reflecting in the windscreen - minor in reasons she didn't like the "dealer A" experience but mentioned as background as to how come we were discussing trade plates with dealer B.

Yes, agreed.. If OP doesn't mind, where else to affix trade plates to front of vehicle?
