Morning guys,

I'm going to York Raceway on Sunday and planning on taking part in the 'Run What You've Brung' event. This is my first venture into any form of motor sport, if you can call it that. Obviously I've watched Fast & the Furious in preparation as I'm sure its just like that in reality!
I'm going to check my 350Z over for fluid levels, tyre pressure, brakes etc. I've got a helmet sorted.
Anything else I've missed??
or any advice on how to get the best out of my day??

cheers
Adam

am I right in thinking to slightly over inflate my tyres?

it worked for the Top Gear episode on the salt flats!

Make sure you have something with long sleeves as they insist on it plus windows up so it can get hot. If you stage slightly further back, you get a few more mph. If you have slow (or normal) reflexes and there is an orange light, aim to go on the orange. You do risk fouling your start and not getting a time at all but most people's reflexes are slow enough that it'll be green as they go. It's a gamble, sometimes worth it. On a red/green light, you just have to hone your reflexes and don't panic.
In my Z28, I ran between 14.2 and 13.8 but on one launch with no traction, a 15.xx so stay cool.
Forget the waterbox, you'll just lose traction. If you simply can't get decent traction as these tracks are very slippery then aim to get it off the line at around 2-2500 rpm and as soon as it grips, plant it, or you'll end up spinning for the first eighth.

It works for top speed but you're probably looking for traction off the line, so a lower pressure than normal will be better.

You won't be as quick of the line as you hope and lights change quicker than you think wink

If it's like Santa Pod it will be very slippery, not sure what they do to the track on RWYB days there. But the last time I went I was still getting wheel spin at 50mph on part throttle, on a normal road I can usually plant it from a standstill with minimal fuss.

There was even an Elise struggling off the line and most comical an Impreza spinning all its wheels snaking away from the blocks.

If driven well your car might clock 100mph at the 1320 so you might need a helmet. Also some places can be fussy about having arms covered.

Lower rear tyre pressures will give you more grip off the line and is what drag racers do. Over inflated fronts will reduce rolling resistance and also make you quicker.

However, if you have no way of sorting the pressures out again to go home don't bother.

Some will remove anything of weight like jack, spare wheel and so on and have only a 1/4 tank of fuel. In theory it will help, but if you're not driving near to your best you probably won't see any real gain.

Basically have fun! biggrin

Oh and switch the TCS off....

I have a convertable so does that mean I have to race with the roof up?? I've got a full face helmet.
Obviously roof up is faster but wanted it down a few times just for the noise factor

Get all the st out of the boot. Remove the rear and passenger seats if you don't need them. Leave the spare wheel out. Take a dump wink

Lost weight = cheapest BHP

And remember when you're whizzing past the blurred crowd - no matter the speed and the revs, there's always an extra gear that will engage Warp speed biggrin

Turn the traction control off, take all the unnecessary crap out of the car and fold your mirrors in!

Take lots of pics/video!

Check the regs at the venue you are going. I suspect roof up will be required, but some might let you run roof down, but in a full race suit and with arm straps.

Drop your tire pressures and don't get full throttle off the line. If 330hp thinks Santa Pod is slick don't even go there with York!

Just creep up on it, get your shifts right and the times will tumble. Its about consistency.

And it doesn't matter how you stand by your car, it's how you drive it!

Anyway, sounds like loads of fun!
Maybe a quick NOS setup possible by then wink.

cheers!

You'll be cacking your pants so much for the first couple of runs that you won't care about whether you've got the tyre pressures right, or emptied the boot, or drained the fuel tank. Just turn up for a laugh and enjoy it - it's exhilarating. Until you establish a baseline time there's no point gunning for every split second.

Try and line up with a car with similar performance if you can.

Oh, and don't miss any gear changes paperbag

Whatever you do... Don't fk up when you change up from 1st to 2nd....

2nd to 3rd ain't so bad... as you'll be far enough away from the croud for them no to hear it! hehe

Seriously though, the 350z 'box (in the early ones anyway) don't like to be rushed...

As already mentioned, don't go sidestepping the clutch at 6krpm, set off like a granny, once you're rolling, pin the the throttle and get ready for 2nd...

Main thing, have fun... Try not to engage battle mode with the guy next to you... Better still, if you have a mate with a similarly capable car, get him to do it as well, much more fun that way...

I definitely agree with a careful start and shift to 2nd. Although I never had a problem with the gearbox not wanting to be rushed, must have been very early models.

Also Not sure if this will help, but I've been gagging for a reason to post it
