Kids are keen on getting a Tortoise as a pet.
I have read the wiki article and also some good information from various websites, but there is nothing like asking on here.

Is a Tortoise a good pet?
Can it be kept solitary?

Where is the best place to get one from and is there anything in particular to look out for health wise??

Im considering a non-hibernating type for all year round fun.

Paint a stone instead.

Same effect, much cheaper to feed.

FFS a tortoise.

It makes no difference. You might as well get a hibernating one! Then at least you don't have to pay for it's food in the winter. It won't do much else other than eat.

I was thinking a brick rather than a stone, but I suppose a stone would be beter as it has no sharp corners.

Another alternative to a tortoise would be to paint some Dulux Gloss onto a piece of wood, prop it up and watch it dry.

Although, now the nights are lighter, you could always send the kids out to watch the grass growing...

No smile But the fastest one tries to bite your sodding toes if you give the sneaky bugger a chance.

Oh, one more thing. They have sex very loudly.

We used to have one. The "pet rock" jibes are pretty much bang on. Zero affection, character or fun.

Not true.

You can tell them apart from their personalities. Some are even mischievous.

"OH, YEAH! WHO'S THE DADDY! TAKE IT bh! YEAH! YEAH!"
"THAT'S IT! DO ME REAL SLOW, BAD BOY. OH, YOU'RE SO HARD."

Not very child-friendly, then.

Lying there, really still, pretending to be dead. The tinkers.

Or goading hares into racing for pink slips.

I had a tortoise for years - they do have character and can be fun. Mine used to chase the dog - they can shift quite well when properly motivated biggrin

You sellotaped lettuce to your dog's bottom?

They can't outrun hippos, it seems:
