Peugeot 407 1.6hdi - anyone have any experience?

Ok I'll start by saying I don't want this to turn into another Peugeot bashing thread.
That aside a friend of mine has asked me what I think of the above as a day to day economical runabout. I'm not very familiar with them so I said I'd try to find out a bit more about them. So his questions are:
- Are they reliable?
- As economical as claimed?
- Common faults?
- Suitable for big miles?
- Ok to drive?
- Alternatives?
- Do they last?
To my eye they are an ok looking car (gaping grill aside), seem reasonable value for money, I've heard good things about Peugeots diesel engines. I've also heard the ride is harsh. Can anyone confirm/deny/add to this?
