Hi
Im 18 years old and my insurance for my first year is just coming to an end. So i will soon have 1 years experience and 1 years ncb.
I currently own a 1.0 vw lupo, which is a great car and in top condition for its age, so im reluctant to mess with it in any way.
I now want something to mess with, a bit sportier with less body role, maybe a 1.4 engine to be quciker and bareable on the motorway.
Obviously insurance is a big influence on my choice due to my age...
I am looking to spend max 1800 on my next car, but have been looking at cheap vw's to euro

Cars I have been looking at
1.6 zetec s (quoted 1450 best insurance, although 3rd party)
1.4 Lupo sport 16v 100hp (quoted 1317 best insurance) - Thats £11 more than my 1.0 will be with 2x the power
205 gti - 2900 frown
Bmw 318i and 320 - 2343 each (no difference between 1.8 and 2.0)
1.3cl mk 2 polo (1417 best quote)
1.3 g40 polo -I have been quoted 1417 on these by churchill, but they are picking them all up as 1.3s, making me think my insurance will be void... which i am not willing to risk

Does anyone have any suggestions on other cars i can possibly look at, which will be nippy and fun to drive, but not kick me in the balls on insurance...

Also insurance companies that are cheap for less experienced drivers?

Thanks shaun

Are these prices for fully comp insurance?

If so, £1300 to insure an 18 year old on a 1.4 Lupo sport sounds like a good deal.

How about an E30 318i? Can be done on classic insurance for £cheap.

Yes, get one of these, seriously quick.

Do a search though, I think they go bang a bit (and rust)

ring up churchil and check with the g40.

Other alternatives:

106 rallye
106 1.4/1.6 xsi
306 xs 1.8, only insurance group 6 but about 115bhp
saxo vtr, vts would probably be too steep on insurance
classic mini 1,3
205 gti, not sure about insurance, maybe a 1.6 might be ok
Clio 1.2 with the cup package, not sure how much would cost though

Thanks for the suggestions guys,
All the quotes i have shown are fully comp, apart from the zetec
only prob with the lupo sports are they are quite pricey to begin with, struggel to find one under 2k
As for the punto, id love one but a mate of mine owning one rules it out aha
318i i got quoted 2300ish, and exact same price for the 320, which is a bit steep for me frown

205 gti? hmm good suggestion, totally forgot about that and i will get some quotes done for one

Thanks

At your age, with so little insurance discount you're just pissing money away.

If lupo sports are at the top of your price range why not consider a Seat Arosa sport instead, much cheaper to buy and essentially the same car.

There is NO way in hell you can get a Polo G40 for only a few quid more as they are insurance group 15. a Polo S which churchill have quoted you on is a 55hp 1.3.

Lupo Sport looks good for the win. They're great cars. Also worth looking at the Seat Arosa version as they might offer better value and dare I say it, the 1.4 TDi version..

The G40 is a fun little car if a little flawed in the handling and brakes department, but they're really quite quick. They're all quite long in the tooth now though so you'd have to be prepared to spend a little on upkeep. Also the chargers need fairly frequent rebuilds which can be costly. They're all 1.3's by the way.

And lastly, you seem to like your Veedubs so this may be a none starter, but you should really take a look at the 106 1.4 XSi. They're the forgotten hot (ok, warmish) 106 but are absolutely brilliant fun. The best ones will be around the £1000 mark which would leave plenty of change to fix any niggles.

In fairness, the OP has said that the car he currently runs is going to cost about £1300 to insure and is worth £1800. If he can more or less do a straight swap for something a little more interesting with little or no impact on the insurance, then why not? It's not like the Lupo Sport is going to be vastly more to run than the 1.0 (assuming that's what the OP went for).

Suprisingly expensive to insure for youngsters though.

I'd take the Lupo 16v. Always liked the look of these, especially with those twin centre-exit exhausts, looks a little bit special. Lupo GTI is out of the question so this I assume must be the next best thing, saw one yesterday in black with the GTI wheels on, a looker indeed, bonnet bras are available to 'euro' it... Actually starting to sort of warm to this bonnet bra fad actually

Yea man thats what i mean, i originally planned to keep my car untill 21 but realising i can upgrade for no extra cost seemed a bit of a no-brainer smile
