mot failure

Ah car failed mot these are the things it failed on emissions so thats 2 new cats on order washer jets not working,front gaiter split 2 new lambda sensors needed,headlight low and also failed on handbrake.So dam annoying got one cat already but the other one wont be with garage til wensday at the earliest.My mechanic said he has a pretty busy week next week so still might not be on road til week after next.He has got the cats off and got the washer jet motor working.I really want the car back for next weekend if he cant do the other bits wood they be something that joe public could tackle(ie me)mines a 2.5

Thats a broad spectrum there. It depends how handy you are. Some people are good with spanners and some people are spanners . If you have got a fairly good aray of tools and you really want the car back then its worth a go. If you find you cant do it you can always take it back to him. Although that could be a bit embarrassing. Its always handy to have a friend who is a mechanic.

yeah could be embarrasing if i have a crack and things dont work out the exhaust set up looks not 2 bad to do i think i could do that not sure how easy the gaiter and lambda sensors plus handbrake wood be though.

the front gaitor is really easy took me 10 mins if you want me to explain it to you give us a call mate.

i'm pretty sure the 2.5 has only one lambda

if you fix the lambda - the car may pass the mot without changing the cats

The 2.5 only had one. If it got upgraded to the MBE then a second may have been fitted. But std was only 1.

Im not sure but i think you have to adjust the handbrake inside the drum. If its fully adjusted you can just use some spacers.

Sorry to hear this Chris and hope you get it all sorted soonest. FYI, the handbrake is a weak point and often fails an MOT. I never use mine - pointless!

If you do It will seize eventually, guaranteeing an MOT failure, the best thing is to keep it adjusted properly. Also worth noting that you can apply huge leverage with the handbrake lever so if something seizes you stand a good chance of breaking it.

What were the emission readings and did the handbrake fail on lack of effort or too much movement in the lever itself?

I always use the handbrake and leave it in gear whilst parked in a public place, or on my drive. When it's in my garage I just leave it in gear. The reason being that it's likely to be left in my garage for long periods ( say a week ) and I don't wont the pads to stick to the discs, but when in a public place or my drive, equally I don't wont it rolling away, so better with it on and in gear.

my mechanic said the emissions were sky high and the rear right hand wheel was showing very little effort when on the rollers
