What is the coolest car for under a grand?

Thinking of getting somthing for the summer for a bit of a road trip driving round the country visiting friends and generally getting out and about! Needs to be in goog condition and not cost a fortune to run and be able to carry some outdoor and camping gear and Poppy (my dog)! Thinking along the lines on a Scimitar Sabre, Opel Manta, Volvo 480 or somthing else a bit different!

Don't want anything too obvious or normal!

I'd love one but would worry about the condition for a grand and its touring ability!

I bought one for a grand back in January. Since then I've done about 3k miles in it & it hasn't missed a beat once. Starts first time, every time & bombs along at 55 / 60 quite happily.

Parts for them are absolute peanuts as well (a complete V8 conversion is only £1,500 or so if you are so inclined.

Ahem, Range Rover Vogue V8 would be cooler and more useable.

I've not done it, but that seemed to be the going rate for a conversion when I checked. If it can be done cheaper (bearing in mind you need new diffs, gearbox & an upgrade to disks (so I believe)

There's no point in looking for a specific car in that price bracket. Just have a look around at classifieds, adtrader, ebay etc etc, and then decide on something that you think is 'cool'.

Personally I'd say a Series 1 RX7 would be cool, but its not everyone's cup of tea! smile

MX5. Both of mine were well under £1k and theres not much about that is more fun to cruise about in for the money.
