I'm sick of those " Hi, I'm Monica and I'm a computer science student and have learned how to set up a web-cam in my dorm room come and watch me etc" messages that pop up all the time (ironic most of them are for programs to stop it all).

Can anyone tell me how to stop them - I know its in the computer mangement console becuase I fixed it on my last computer - something to do with netsend but I have forgoten.

(btw the messages come up in the centre of the screen in standard grey windows like for an error message with a OK button if that helps btw)

Nathan,

I assume you're using XP, if so, click start, then click Control Panel. Then click on Adminstative Tools. In the Admin Tools menu, click Services. Scroll down the list of sevices until you come to the one called 'Messenger', (nothing to do with MSM)Right click over Messenger and choose Properties. In the Startup type menu, click 'Disable', once done, click 'Stop', and you will never have those annoying pop up messages again
This is one of the first tweaks I do when building new systems.

You would also be wise to run some kind of firewall, plenty of other far nastier things can get at your computer if you're not running one.

I use to have Zone Alarms but didn't like the idea of another process running all the time and ave instead enabled the built in firewall although its meant to be crap

So the built in firewall won't actually be another process that runs all the time either?

Put ZA back on. You won't notice it or regret it!

1. goto to start button and click run

2. then type %SystemRoot%system32services.msc /s

3 click ok

and the sevice admin program will run

one thing thease mesages have nothibing to do with MSN messanger

They are from a spamer exploting a built in sevice in windows

original intended to broardcast masagees to other users on a network.
and is basicly useless

but easy to exploite by the spamers and very anoying.

SO TURN IT OFF

This has worked perfectly on my home PC with a recent version of Windowsxp. Thanks Guys.
Now if anyone out there can help me read my Yahoo E mails i would be seriously greatful.
I guess my computer has switched something off or something and whilst I know there are messages in the Inbox, I get "this page is unavailable". On my work computer I can read them perfectly so it's my home PC at fault.
