Walked home from the pub tonight, and remembered that I'd seen this camera earlier in the week, so picked up the camera and walked over and took some pics (it's near my house). So what is it?

Obviously it'll read your number plate for one reason or another (the black bit on the left is pulsing IR constantly and the top of the three lenses is a laser)

but what does it do? What is it for? It's not a speed camera afaik (if it was, it'd be an average one, and I've not seen another one, so it isn't that), but it's a bit excessive for an ANPR camera...

suggestions?

edit: It's only been there a couple of weeks

well there's obviously wifi (of sorts) present, and the Cat5 cables go down in the casing to a protruded base station which has fans running (obviously a computer). It's intriguing, especially with the recent reports of location aware speed cameras, but no mention of anything within several miles of this one...

Just a thought, could this be a new "Low Emission Zone" camera?

ANPR, protecting us from the evil men, 'cause they all arrive by car don't they!

They were installed around Manchester, about the same time they were talking about a congestion charge......makes you wonder.
