Just wondering, what are the long term consequences of knackered CV joints?
Once they start "clonking" I mean. Just curious, as they don't seem to be items of particular urgency to repair...(I realise they are, they just don't seem to be...not that that makes sense)

The shock loadings as the slack is taken up won't do wheel bearings or the diff any good. They can die quite discreetly, one of mine on the 944 would clatter slightly when stinking hot. It was well knackered inside with all the plating gone from the balls & the cage hardening broken through in two places!

Can have quite nasty effects, e.g. sudden and violent steering forces if they break up enough to bind.

Blimey. That hadn't crossed my mind although I'd assumed there would/could be some pretty disastrous things happen..

One day you'll have drive....another day you wont.

You figure whether they are worth replacing.

Am somewhat confused at this.. where did I suggest they weren't? I asked out of genuine interest about the mechanical consequences

Had a noisy CV joint on an old Polo about 10yrs ago. Ignored on general principle of marginal utlity (ie car being worth ~ annual tax+ins) and it lasted another 50Kmiles or so. Then one day the (then) OH got in it and simply had no forward drive out of Tescos.

Cost all of £50 to fix, not bad at 180Kmiles. I miss that car.

its quite simple.

The consequences of not replacing, will be you will break down somewhere, with no warning whatsoever ( apart from the clicking noise you had been hearing )

Cool thank-you..although previous replies were more what I was expecting in terms of explanation.
