I've posted this in French Bred but it's not really getting enough traffic to get an answer there.

Sometimes the speedo needle of my clio wavers slightly and then drops to zero, sometimes staying at zero or immediately returning to the correct speed. It usually only does this in wet weather but has done it in the dry before. Also when this happens the car feels like it's accelerating a little as if I've quickly pushed my foot hard on the pedal for a second.

Another owner has exactly the same problem here http://www.renaultforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=69...

I've explained it in more detail in the original thread http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Hopefully it's just a faulty sensor that I can fit myself. But first I'm going to check the wiring to the sensor as suggested on the renault forum link. Anyone experienced this?

Had similar thing ages ago on the wifes old Golf. Think it turned out to be a sensor on the gearbox or something?

Probably not much help really!

Well I've just had a good look around the gearbox and I think I've found the sensor plugged into the top/back of the gearbox. If anyone knows exactly what it looks like could they identify it if I get a picture of it?

It has a heatsheild on it that faces the cabin and not the engine which seems odd to me. Two wire clusters lead from it, one through the bulkhead into the cabin and one into the engine. I suppose that explains the engine accelerating by itself when the sensor goes doolally - can't think of the reason for it though.

No worries mate. I've been researching the problem and it seems I may just need to get the sensor out and give it a thorough clean. The sensor is indeed on the gearbox and I've located it.

Though I'm having real trouble getting the plug off the top. This is 3/4 down the engine bay right at the back and I can't see a damn thing around the back of the plug where I think I can feel the release clip.

I've posted this on a renault forum in the hope someone can offer some tips to getting it off.

I have had my Clio 172 Cup since new and also have the same identical problem as described.

The problem is intimitent and I can go days sometimes before it reappears.

For me the change in engine behaviour is like the throttle becomes more responsive when the speedo dies and there is definitely a change in engine note. I think this might be linked to air/fuel ratio as this is linked to speed and the speedo? Not sure on this point but remember seeing something about it being posted before.

Anyway I'm going to try and clean the sensor today if I can get it removed or failing that get a new one.

Will post back if the sensor is the issue.

I cleaned mine which helped a little but I needed a new sensor. It cost £25 and was easy enough to fit myself. I have number for the place if you need it.

That would be good if I could get the number as going for a new sensor seems like the better option in the long term.

The number is on there. Call and see if they have any in stock, then they'll ask you to use the online parts request form on their website. Takes a couple of days to arrive.

If you need any help locating it and taking it out just ask. It was a nightmare for me to find information about replacing it!

If anyone else reading this has the problem remember it's a different (and probably more expensive) part if you have ABS. Good ol' cup version smile
