WTF is this lever supposed to attach to?
Discussion

To the left of the heater/battery gubbins, what's this lever supposed to be attached to? It's fixed to the inside of the front wing by a knuckle and short rod. At the end of that is this lever. Obviously the screw pinches up against a spindle. Its difficult to get my hands in for a feel but wherever it's supposed to go, it's gonna be a ball-ache to re-attach!

It looks to me like the linkage between the water valve for the heater and the motor which controls it, or the rod might go to one of the flaps which control air flow around the dash The motor is the round black thing with the red wire going into the back of it. On the other side of it should be an offset wheel or arm which the linkage attaches to. Not sure as mine is different.
If you need a new motor I have one somewhere brand new which was sent to me by mistake for my Chim, but then I found out the Chim heater is controlled by less sophisticated cables.

Recirculation flap limit stop....2ba bolt with a bit of washer hose on to make it look pretty? I might be wrong, does it rotate and hit the micro switch....

Other than giving me a headache and wrist-ache it's doin' diddly squat.Adrian@

back side of that motor plate is a little crank arangement that attaches to that linkage.
think heater valve motor, circulates and pulls the flap shut via that linkage.
undo the bolts top and bottom to release motor plate, disconnect the linkage from plate.
attach the the linkage to the crank on the motor. loosely bolt plate back on
attach the linkage to the plate and do it all up...pain in the butt.

Thanks Andy, I've just tyre-levered myself out of the footwell after a bit of feeling around and came to the conclusion you describe. It's a cool air vent flap mechanism. I can feel two limit switches and a spindle on the back of the plate. Either the crank/lever or the long pinch-screw contact the limit switches.think heater valve motor, circulates and pulls the flap shut via that linkage.

Which of the controls operate the motor? I've fiddled with 'em all and I can here things whirring away but those motors stop in relation to the rotary switch position. So it's none of those. I'd expect to be able to feel the spindle rotating and hear the motor. If I whip the battery out tomorrow then I'll take some shots to post-up.

Yup, the motor turns the crank which opens/closes the flap (brown sponge covered panel you see there) via the push/pull rod. The micro-switches are the fully open/closed limit switches which the long screw operates. Effectively the flap mechanism is a valve which allows you to proportion the amount of cooling fresh air into the footwell through one of the rotary pots on the heater panel. I forget whether it was the top or bottom left control; whatever, I was overjoyed to see it function and lay there contorted in the foot-well with a smile on my face. I think the Chim' version is cable operated; that wouldn't make a funky buzzing sound though.
You should be able to see if it's operating without removing anything other than the carpeted battery compartment cover panel. If you do need to get easy access however, I'd remove the battery as I did.
