Race The Runway Back At Edinburgh Airport

Charity drag contest brings new meaning to the phrase 'airport run'

'Race the Runway' - a chance for the speed fiends of Scotland to Vmax their cars on Edinburgh Aiport's runway - is back.

Last year's event went down well, with 48 cars raising a combined £16,000 for the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow and Edinburgh's St Columba's Hospice.

Vehicles from last year's event included a Ford Mustang GT, Nissan Skyline GTR, a Caparo T1 and an Ultima GTR - which hit the top recorded speed of 177mph.

This year, Race the Runway is aiming to step things up, and is hoping to raise £50k for charity by letting 96 cars loose on the airport's 1800m secondary runway - which will temporarily become the longest drag strip in Scotland.

Race the Runway 2010 will take place on 1 July.

Do you get to race against commercial flights as they are taking off? You acn just picture peering out of the window as your 737 rumbles down the tarmac. "Good heavens! Is that an Enzo?"

How do you enter for the event? And are there any restrictions on the cars?

So whats the deal? Can you just turn up and spectate and have a nosy round the cars or is it just open to the people willing to run they're cars down the strip? Quite fancy coming along but don't think my Audi A4 is much of a racer!

THE 996 TURBO has a few tricks under the lid extra power upgrade etc remap, no proof of top speed as the timers broke on the day, my pal left me standing he said he got 172 before he ran out of road, his car can do 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, I have the video chasing him, I will see if I can upload it,

Good to see it back, had a blast last year, even though I managed to balls up my first two runs at it. Will be back again this year.

Last year the event was run by Gordon Dewar the MD of Edinburgh Airport.
Entry was £250 and spectators were £50 (ouch). Still its all for cherry tea.

Curious.

the info pack says the runway is 1800m long, which includes 450m braking distance.

I assume this means top speed measured at 1350m.

450m doesnt sound like an awful lot of braking distance ?

Any thoughts from people who took part last year ?

There was not nearly enough braking distance last year, my car suffered cracked front discs....

Also, the ultima appeared to have an engine failure, the quickest car was 177 mph but is was an Evo VIII, not the ultima, with my Evo VI 2nd with 176 mph.

Hope it went well this year, haven't heard anything yet though?
