Not a pleasant subject to deal with and I appreciate that different people have different skills and abilities, but how do you deal with a co-worker who is given certain tasks which are ultimately your responsibility, but the only consistency is that they do it badly?

It's rather awkward not to sound personal but the issue seems to be concentration - the tasks are not difficult but I can almost guarantee that if I take a random sample of 10 "identical" requests they will be done in 7 or 8 variations.

Documentation was suggested and it is an area we fall short on, but it's a role where there's always a little thinking on your feet involved, and it's stupid things like using the wrong case when entering info where I'd feel quite awkward putting together documentation down to the level of "Use a capital letter in location X, Y and Z".

So why not have a word with them about it?

I have done that and it seems to be accepted well enough but not much changes.

Rightly or wrongly when you're checking recent changes and see a load of little inconsistencies I have been just correcting them as I feel like an ahole keep pointing these things out.

Why do you feel like that? Someone else is causing you work by being inconsistent. Unfortunately, process documents often have to be addressed to the lowest common denominator, i.e. the thicky who doesn't follow verbal instructions properly or consistently. Once you have the processes documented there is no excuse for doing anything differently. you can then move on to the disciplinary procedure which may be the only way to shock the gormless into doing the job right in the first place.

I guess I feel a bit like Bill from Office Space.

Point them out three times in the right way then hire someone else, unless an improvement is seen.
