We used it to good effect on a skiing trip where we looked for supermarkets which were just off the autoroute rather than filling up at the over-priced services. Saved us the best part of about £40 as I recall, at a cost of maybe 20 minutes of detours over the course of the total journeys there and back.

Also worth checking, given *our* fuel prices, whether it's worth filling up in the UK of France before starting the journey or getting on the ferry to come home.
