Joe's out and about, but his clutch pedal has gone - does anyone have any tips/ideas whilst he's waiting for the RAC?

Thanks

Jacqueline.

It could possibly be the master cylinder seals that have gone. Is there any oil near his pedals? Or, the seals in the slave cylinder. Any oil under the car below the clutch/gear box area?
Worse, it could be the actual clutch. May be fingers broken.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like the clutch slave/master cylinder gone.

Very sudden when mine went. The AA guy bled mine till I got pressure back in the clutch which was enough to get me from Glasgow to Leeds with minimal clutch changes. There's a braided pipe coming up from the back of the engine bay with a nipple on the end, it's for bleeding the clutch. Might work to get him home.

Master - cheap
Slave - expensive

How floppy is it? If it has suddenly gone then you're pretty much screwed. If it has been going for a while, you could try bleeding and topping up with fluid, which should get you a few miles down the road till it goes again.

You could always start it in gear and just stay in second, stalling it at each junction Not recommended, but it's what i did when mine died less than a mile from my parents house.

Is there fluid in the master cylinder still? If yes, then it's likely to be the master cylinder failed, no fluid generally means a slave cylinder failure (although not in my case )

I'd recommend changing both the master and slave at the same time even if only one has gone. I changed just the master and managed to get 500 yeards before the increased pressure of a new cylinder blew out the slave.

It was about £500 in total to have both replaced.

The car is going in to HHC tomorrow on the back of a low loader

RAC bloke couldn't fix it. He tried bleeding it, and about lost an eye when the fluid jetted out!

There was a bit of fluid around the rubber seal at the top of the pedal inside but plenty in the reservoir.

The pedal had been a bit "sticky" previously, I know I'm being optimistic but could it simply be something stuck?

Oh, and do I any stand any chance with the warranty people if it is the master/slave cylinder?

As there is a little oil around the pedal, it may well be the seals that have gone in the master cylinder. Warranty may cover it, but if it is the master cylinder, and they refuse, its not expensive to repair. Lets hope it is that and not broken fingers.

Sorry, but what's all this broken fingers stuff?

I thought I understood most mechanical things but this is a new one on me.

Clutch fingers has different symptoms, I believe. You clutch pedal will be fine, but you just can't select any gears.

Yours is almost certainly the master cylinder, The seal kit is about £20 plus an hours labour to fit.

I'll look forward to next weeks posting about a bust slave seal

Facing the inevitable then, will that be covered on my warranty "when" it goes?

The fingers are on the diaphram spring, which is part of the clutch itself. Trooper1212 is correct: usually when they go, you cant select the gears. Quite common for them to fail (more than a normal car anyway). I should know. Mine went 6mths ago.

I have just had a new clutch as three fingers fingers on the cover broke the symtoms were that the peadal had to be prssed right down to the floor and it was still hard to get it into gear. While the gear box was off Joolz was going to change the seals on the slave cylinder but found it to be scored so put a new one on, cost around £600 for clutch £100 slave cylinder but have not got bill yet so prices only very aprox. Have got pic's of broken clutch but still can't put none on here sorry.

Oh the memories... almost brings a tear to my eye....

Same thing almost happened to me

Not necessarily....

When my slave went I just had the seals replaced due to the cylinders being in short supply and I also had a ferry to catch.

6000 miles later and the master is still holding in there.

Have faith
