Any ideas what this could be?

Usually a fault with either the steering angle sensor or wheel sensor, only way to pinpoint the exact cause is to get the error codes read. Alignment issues or the steering wheel not being straight when the fronts wheel are pointing forward would cause the steering angle sensor to throw a fault.

Thanks. I'll pass on the info - He's getting it diagnostic checked in the next few days, but the local indy wants to charge him £69! I told him that the local BMW dealer only charges £35!

Have you recently had tyres changed? Happened recently to my e46 330i after new boots all round. Took it to local friendly garage and they cleared the fault code and problem gone away. They didn't charge anything either.

Happened to me in winter during the snow. It turned out the steering angle sensor just needed resetting to it's zero position.
