Looking for thoughts on whether to keep hold or shift my wife's car.

53 plate Toyota RAV4 2.0 5 door petrol, manual.
Full leather, tinted windows, side steps.

Bought it 4 years ago, it now has 85k on the clock.
I owe £5,300 on it, which is due in 4 weeks as a final payment.

I've checked the usual places for used prices and I reckon I should be able to get about this price as a part-ex.

MOT was done a couple of weeks ago, and it had 2 new front tyres and pads.
Also had a new windscreen due to a nasty crack which spread from a chip. (Thankfully covered by insurance for £50 excess as the invoice was for over £800!?!)

Has 5 months tax on it.

Now the bad bits... The wife had a couple of months about a year back where she decided that she was driving a bumper car, so we have a couple of small cracks in the front bumper; O/S/F wheel arch trim was removed by a gatepost; N/S/R door has a foot long crease in it from a fence post; and finally, there are numerous dings in all four doors from the school car park. It will also need two new rear tyres in the next 3 - 4 months.

So...

(1) - Due to the bits and pieces that will need doing by a trader if they were to take it as a part-ex, how much are they likely to knock off the price?

(2) - What other cars should we consider? She does about 12k per year, mostly short local runs as she is a Carer and goes from one house to the next, so is a diesel something we should be looking at? Getting around 30mpg from the RAV.

Ideally needs to be 4 door, and not too low, as she often needs to take elderly (read not very flexible!) clients out, and they often struggle getting in and out of my E46 BMW when she has used that in the past.

The 4X4 element of the RAV helped out massively when we had the snow this year, as it just worked. In her line of work, there is simply no option to not turn up to some of her clients whatever the excuse, so this needs to be considered also.

Happy to look at around the £10-12k mark.

(3) - Do we just keep hold of the RAV and gradually get the above bits sorted (or not!)? My slight concern with this option is that I have a slight nagging feeling that something is going to go hugely wrong with the RAV at some point, so my preference is to swap for something younger. Thoughts?

I could go on with lots more questions, but would really appreciate the PH view on the above.

Thanks in advance.

Ouch, that is steep. Surely an inflated price due to it being the insurance claim job?!

Probably, but it was the insurers own recommended windscreen repair company, so who am I to question! laugh

Stepdad had Mk1 Rav4 (auto box) in the past - used it for a European trip all the way to the Baltic States and back once. No trouble at all.

Yep - Not had a problem with it in 4 years, but would be keen to get people's thoughts on value and other options...

Finding myself cruising the PH classifieds looking at Rangies, X5s and XC90s.
If I get REALLY bored, I'll be onto people carriers next!

If my other half had inflicted that much damage on her car, Id be reluctant to shell out for another.

IMO, the Rav seems to tick all the boxes, yet you want to change it just in case something goes wrong? I'd keep it personally.

It was good ammo for a while! She just had a spell of bad luck TBH (and anti-biotics!)

We've just had a drive in an Alfa 147 JTD 3 dr Sport 08 plate with delivery miles on the clock.

It's on for £11k.

Any thoughts on these? I've had a couple of Alfa's before and have had the usual niggles, but they were older models.

Does the 147 have any particular afflictions to be aware of?

They offered £3,500 part ex for the RAV4 due to the work they reckon it needs. Bit tight I reckon?

The 120bhp 147 Sport is OK, the 150bhp 147 Sport Q2 is better - check which it is.

Have a look at this thread, there's some useful info from owners:

Much as I love Alfas, I might be a little wary of one that has sat for two years if you're concerned about the reliability of a Toyota.

Hmmm - You make a good point.

OK - What other diesels should we be considering? Starting to think that another 4x4 would suit.

Volvo XC70 fits the bill

Good strong puller that diesel engine too IIRC. Plenty of space and probably easier to get into than a traditional 4x4 due to the ride height.

Thanks for the suggestion. Too big for us I think.
Golf diesels have always struck me as a good option?
Shame they don't do an all-wheel-drive diesel!

The Mk5 Golf 2.0 TDI was available with 4motion, the VAG haldex part time AWD system.

Skoda Octavia is also available with the same 4wd set up I think

Newer models appear to be called the scout.

In your situation I'd be tempted to keep it , pay the final payment and then get the jobs done to tidy it up. Run it for another year or two and then p/x it It seems to have served you well and I'd think it has many more years of service left in it.

Thanks, but I just could not do it... I think it must be hard-wired into me to turn my nose up at Skodas.

Hmmm... food for thought. Trouble is that I've now got into 'car-changing' mode, so I'm going to need to go through the other options and see what I come up with.

My concern is that if we spend money on it now, then are we going to see anything for the outlay?
