What's the general consensus on these. I mean, I know they're quite heavy, but they seem very fast. Are there any other advantages over "normal" bikes, or are they just as gay as they look?

Recumbant trikes are silly rapid.... Saw a Dutch bloke in Italy once who had been waiting an hour for his mates to catch up and didn't expect them to turn up anytime soon. Awesome blend of alu, carbon and a really comfy looking seat.

In my opinion, a brilliant way to be diverse and, more importantly, enjoy yourself.

Don't worry, it has.
In defense, your honour, I was pootling along at the time, beacuse I was lost. For future reference, trying to pedal uphill and map reading don't go well together.

So, are they any good up hills? The one I say seemed to be quite fast uphill, but on longer, steeper acsents are they still as good?

While we are on the subject, Ive been looking at small folding trikes. Im disabled (Cerebal Palsy) so 2 wheeled bikes are totally out of question. I wanted something to get round le mans on first and foremost, as i do struggle.

ive found one of these: http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/112642.h... which looks pretty cool, and not as "gay" looking as most trikes. I was going to ask for opinions, but then again, i guess these smaller folding trikes dont hold much populararity here!

It's not so small, but I think there are a few US companies who make folding recumbent trikes, and Hase in Germany do too.

These are quite pricey but at least you would be able to get up some decent speed unlike the other trike you have mentioned. And in my opinion these are 100% not gay at all.

Not as gay? Not as gay as what, a pink tutu? Ask Quinny, he's got a scooter thing that he uses when his knees give out.

Was it a recumbent bike or some kind of upright adult's tricycle that flew past you?

This is true. Most people have little flagpoles on the back of them. This would be even cooler if you flew the PH flag.

I don't think anyone would miss you then.

Can't speak with authority on Trikes as I only have a regular (2 wheeled) recumbant but hills are not generally a problem despite the myths about 'bents.

Trikes have a further advantage on hills, you can run as low a gear as you like and sit there cranking without worrying about balance, so with the right setup you could potentially outclimb any other form of bike!

Trikes also brake/stop like you wouldn't believe- even put 2 wheeled recumbents to shame, have seen them sideways with all three wheels locked stopping from stupid speeds!

Only issue I've seen trikes have is riding on the road, due to the width they have to ride in the gutter (with all the bumps that entails) on a 2wheeled bike (DF or bent) you can dodge the potholes :-)

These boys http://www.icetrikes.co.uk/home make a nice folding model
