The battery light has been flickering on, I also notice the dash lights flickering and I have convinced my self the car stutters a bit as well, anyone any ideas on what to look at?

Sounds like the alternator may not be charging the battery properly. Do you have access to a multimeter? If so test the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running, it should be somewhere between 13.8 and 14.4V

Is your alternator belt at the correct tension, and nice and clean (i.e. not oily)?

It takes a fair bit of power to turn an alternator at speed, so a slack belt would mean that it could run under-speed.

The strange thing about this problem is that the light mainly comes on when you are going down through the gears (when releasing the clutch), The belt is tight, another thing that happens is the protective circuitry on the seperate stereo amp cuts in, in fact it was this annoying problem that started me looking at problems.

If it changes when overrunning maybe its an engine/chassis earth wire problem, power off letting the engine rock enough to open up a broken cable or terminal

I did put a new additional earth cable straight from the battery to the chassis, just to make sure

Check the one from the engine to the chassis, that'd flex & move as you lift off & the engine rocks the other way.
