Hi all,

Thought Id post in General Gassing aswell as the VX section as more people might be able to help here.

For those who own a VX could you please give me some help on insurance matters.

I'm looking to get a 2.2NA model but the insurance is ridiculous.

I'm 22, 5 years NCB and in a Manchester postcode.

Are their any insurance companies that can give cheap insurance at my age for that type of car or is it best to wait until I am older?

The best quote I have received so far is £1800 with Elephant. That's for 7000 miles per year and protected no claims.

Thanks for your help in advance

It's they type of car and the postcode that are killing you. The NW in general is a nightmare, especially without a garage

Likewise I'm 22, 5 years NCB so I know what you should expect to pay. Admiral/Elephant are nearly always cheapest for the likes of us on interesting cars - that quote sounds about right. What's the excess? Mine is a grand!

Ha ha, is there a website or something that shows a rough guide to how they price for different areas?

It comes to £1789.40 with £500 excess with Elephant.

Surprisingly too, I have stated that the car would have a immobiliser and a tracker just to see if the price changes, and it actually jumps up to over £2000 with the added security laugh

Not wanting to kick around the obvious sponsored names, but I got a pretty good deal with Adrian Flux, definitely worth trying.
Had been with elephant/admiral for a while before, cheapest I could find on my Honda, and their quote system is pretty good, gives a reasonable idea of prices. smile

I was 19 (iv just turned 20) when I insured my VX220 5 months ago with 2 years ncb with Admiral for just under £2500 with extras such as courtesy car etc. So to say your 22 with 5 years ncb at £1800 is an absolute joke. Try Admiral and also have a look on the VX220 forum for other companies that offer decent prices. Good luck finding a decent quote.

If you need any info regarding the VX dont hesitate to drop me a PM and I would be happy to share my limited VX knowledge. The best thing to do would be to join www.vx220.org and search for insurance.

Thanks for your help flattotheboards, Ive had a look on the forums of vx220.org and they seem to be saying either Admiral or Elephant. There are a few mentioned that only offer insurance to age 25+.

There is a member who posted this on one of the threads:

'ELEPHANT:

22 years old
parked on drive
all mods declared
3 years NCB
been driving for 5 years
vehicle value 11,000

TOTAL: £723 per year '

I wish I could get that frown

Elephant and Admiral are the same company and tend to chuck out nearly identical quotes.

See how raising the excess affects the quote. Worth it IMO.

There's no clear map as there are too many variable factors, but the key in the NW is lots of thefts (I think 5th highest in UK), fraudulent claims (top 3) and genuine claims for accidents (top 5 again).

I live here so used to suffer the same pian, despite a senior role with a very big insurer. Thankfully they pay for all that a my shiny new 335Ci nowcool

Yeah definately try this - my excess is £500 voluntary and £400 complusory which I didnt realise untill I rung them up to pay for it but this is why they were the cheapest for me by quite a margin. When I was looking for insurance I tried the compare websites and found that Tesco Compare along with my clubcard (which is hardly ever used) were the cheapest and then I went to admiral directly to pay. Just keep searching that is the only thing you can do.

The car is absolutely fantastic though, you wont be disappointed thumbup

Thanks for your help everyone

I've managed to get it to 1231.85 on Elephant by putting the excess to £1000 and adding both my parents as additional drivers (me still being the main)

Now I just have to ask them biggrin

If they were to be named drivers and if I did have to make a claim (lets hope this never happens) it wouldn't effect their insurance would it?

So long as they aren't driving at the time and have nothing to do with the accidnet. I've added my mother to mine - shes never driven it and probably never will but as she has had no accidents/convictions she is perfect for me to add to my policy to lower it.

So raising the excess by £500 saves you £600 on the premium. Even if you claim you're £100 better off than before. This has always been my experience. I've also always added my mum. I think she was saving me about £3/400 at last count and she's only driven my car once.

My vx220 is insured with Competition Car Insurance who were considerably cheaper than any other companies. I'm quite a bit older than you though so a phone call to them will see if they will cover you.

CCI, Chris Knott, Greenlight etc. usually won't insure you on a VX unless you have a year's experience in something similar. Still worth a try though.

I was 23 with 2 years NCB when I got my first VX (a 2.2) and it was under £800 to insure with Admiral (less than my current VX costs me now at 28!). Like others, I suspect the postcode is your biggest killer.

Do you have access to another postcode at all?

When I first moved to Manc I had massive trouble getting the M3 insured. Luckily I still had a property in Cheshire that I was still registered at so kept it with that.

Not so much trouble with my replacement car... TDCi Mondeo... silly

That's a bit naughty to say the least. In your case it was probably at best grey area, whereas if he make sup an address, or uses one where he doesn't really live then he's committing an offence by failing to dosclose all material facts and likely looking at the policy being avoided in the event of a claim.

It's called lying and an insurance loss adjuster could quite easily rubble you in the event of a claim.
