Paintwork deteriating

Top of both front wings have decidedly taken on a rather matte finish, very strange, not seen this before. Could this mean the laquer has been removed through washing and polishing over the years?

Lacquer could be slightly scratched hence giving the dull appearance?

Have you tried a very soft compound to see if this is the case? (not T cut as its far too abrasive)?
