Morning.

I am after some advice with regards to insurance.

I currently have a run a TVR Griff which is used as a weekend car this is insured with Elephant is it was the cheapest at the time (around £800). I also have a daily hack insured with Tescos (around £400).

I am under the impression that Elephant would not pay out anywhere near as much what the car is worth if the worst was to happen so I am planning to insure the Griff under a specialist which will give me an agreed value and track day cover etc once the existing policy is up for renewal.

I do not have a garage so I cannot take advantage of the classic car insurance policies which work out very cheap but insist on the car being garaged. I can only have the NCB on one policy so this currently sits with the Griff.

What is the best way to insure both cars? Does anyone have any experience with multicar policies from specialist insurance companies.

We have 4 on an Admiral multicar policy, but not the chim.

For the other cars, pemiums are cheap as chips!

Even my 18 year olds son's renewal went down from £1700 to £650, (1.1 Sporting).

It would certainly be worth giving A-Plan a call, along with a few other specialists. I think Adrian Flux often post on here too.

I have been with A-plan since I have had the car and they always come up trumps with their pricing.
I now have both the Griff and the Allroad with them after getting a very good deal on a second policy last year.

Can't advise on single 'multicar' policies though sorry.

We've got 3 on admirals multi car too. My (20 year old with full NCB) premium went down from £1000 to £600ish.
I'm wondering how much it would be to get our 1600M added on and for me to be able to drive it, biggrin

I found it cheaper to get my 2 cars on separate policies as the TVR/classic specialists were not very cheap on my Ford and the 'normal' insurance companies were expensive on my TVR and also the cover was not as good.

Might depend what cars you have though i guess...

You can insure a modern classic on an agreed value policy without a garage. my chim lives on the drive and has been insured by Hagerty for 5 years for ~£280 a year and it lives on the drive. Hagerty dont offer tvr insurance any more but there are plenty of others who do (lots of recent threads on this).

Just have to hit the phones and make 'does it need to be garaged' the first question you ask.

Elephant is a sister company of Admiral, and as such, Admiral will match a quote from Elephant. This should mean that you could put the TVR on a multicar policy with Admiral.

I have my Griff insured on a classic policy, I was abvised that due to my postcode my car wouldnt need to be garaged as part of my policy, as I am in a similar position to you. I guess you maybe ok if you live in a low risk area. I am with Mannings.

Mannings and Classic line both offer classic policies where your car doesn't need to be garaged (i'm sure others also do, but i found these 2 to be the best price when i phoned around last month).

+1, just re-insured with mannings after being "dropped" by Hagerty and when I asked about the restrictions for the garaging clause to make sure they weren't being stupid as some do (i.e. can't even leave on drive for 10 minutes) they said the clause could be removed for no additional cost. Therefore although I use a garage I don't declare it garaged.

My daily drive is a nissan primastar which I use for work ,I have full NCB with adrian flux. When I purchased my toy - a 450 CHIM, I contacted manning who mirrored my full NCB on a new policyon the chim.
I currently pay £312 fully comp for 2009 nissan primastar
£340 fully comp for 2001 chimaera 450-limited to 5k miles per year with track day cover.
I would advise you try these specialist insurance companies.

some companies will mirror the NCB from the main car onto the Tiv - I did this when I first got it.

I wasn't aware that some specialist insurance companies would be prepared to mirror NCB onto seperate policy. The main motivation behind a multicar policy was applying my 9 years NCB to both cars.

I shall have a phone around and see what some of specialist brokers say.

Thank you for all your suggestions guys - much appreciated.

Unless you are using the TVR as a daily driver its unlikely that even with 9 years NCB you will get a 'normal' insurance quote that comes even close to a classic policy IME. I had my Chim insured for 1 year with 9 years NCB and it came to ~£800 a year (and that was 4 years ago prices have risen since then). I wouldnt expect to pay more than £300 a year on the classic policy - but that is limited to 5k miles pa

That was what I thought last year, but when I phoned around I could not get the price under £1000 from a specailist. A number of insurers did say that if I had a garage then i could get the price down to around £300, stating that they cannot issue classic policies unless the car is garaged.

I will have another phone around this year and see what they come up with.

maybe I just live in a fortunate postcode - or it could be an age thing ? Cetainly last year would have been comfortably under £200 if I had a garage.

I think you have hit the nail on the head, I am just a bit limited on choice due to the fact I am just under 30, do not have a garage and live in a medium risk post code.

£200!!! - I am off to build myself a garage!!!

I haven't found a multicar policy that works for me - all want to load the policy for one type of car or another such that it's cheaper (and provides better cover) to have all the cars insured by different specialist companies.
