Let's say you were wanted for questioning by certain parties. You don't have unlimited funds but want to lie low for a bit while things calm down.

Where/how would be the best way to stay underground for a while? And how much cash would you need?

The main concerns would be:

1) To stay in the UK or not?
2) How much cash to carry?
3) Decent transport links and wifi connection to keep in touch via email instead of mobiles/landlines (which could be monitored)

The final thing to consider is that large amounts of cash (I think it's currently £5000) can be seized if you don't have a reasonable excuse to carry it. So I'm thinking around £4000 is the maximum that can be taken

Always best to worry about money laundering laws when you're on the run.

Accommodation can be had far cheaper than that. Check out Gumtree or spareroom.co.uk. Rent a room on a monthly (or even weekly basis), pay in cash, use false name and back story. Pack up and move on if you feel the heat.

PAYG mobile.

Cash, as much as you can get your hands on I suppose.

You can probably find a bit of cash in hand work in most places.

If you have short hair grow it, if you have long hair cut it. Perhaps dye it?

How does this work then?

If i shoved £10k under my matress over a few years, it could be confiscated by the police when i went out to spend it? What about if they found it under my matress?

It is more (if my understanding of the proceeds of crime act is correct, I only half listened to the chap giving the talk on it as I have so little interest in crim law) if you cannot show where you got it from then it can be seized from you if you are out in public with 5k or more in cash.

Under your mattress, if your house was searched lawfully then you would have to show where it came from yes.

Yep. Eating grass and rocks for a couple of years would certainly change a fair few things about you.

No one can prove where their cash came from, it is not like you get reciepts from the bank detailing which notes were issued to you.
Do you have to provide recipts to prove you have spent every penny you have ever earned? smile

Wow!

Imagine getting burgled and when the cops arrive you tell them you are actually quite relieved because the burglars didn't find your life savings...

cop: "Life savings eh? Can you prove that Sir?"

Well if you've got bank statements it would show money going in, and money coming out at so and so cash machine, so that could cover where it came from?

This.

I'd just spend a couple of months fishing and being Ray Mears then re emerge as an unshaven crime boss of the wilderness.

I'm assuming by "certain parties" you mean Labour and Lib Dems and you want to lay low until Thursday after voting.

It'll only cost you about £9.50, June edition of Knave magazine, and free accomodation in your neighbours shed.

A man went to a hotel and walked up to the front desk to check in. The woman at the desk gave him his key and told him that on the way to his room, there was a door with no number that was locked and no one was allowed in there. Especially no one should look inside the room, under any circumstances. So he followed the instructions of the woman at the front desk, going straight to his room, and going to bed.
The next night his curiosity would not leave him alone about the room with no number on the door. He walked down the hall to the door and tried the handle. Sure enough it was locked. He bent down and looked through the wide keyhole. Cold air passed through it, chilling his eye. What he saw was a hotel bedroom, like his, and in the corner was a woman whose skin was completely white. She was leaning her head against the wall, facing away from the door. He stared in confusion for a while. He almost knocked on the door, out of curiosity, but decided not to.
This disinclination saved his life. He crept away from the door and walked back to his room. The next day, he returned to the door and looked through the wide keyhole. This time, all he saw was redness. He couldn’t make anything out besides a distinct red color, unmoving. Perhaps the inhabitants of the room knew he was spying the night before, and had blocked the keyhole with something red.
At this point he decided to consult the woman at the front desk for more information. She sighed and said, “Did you look through the keyhole?” The man told her that he had and she said, “Well, I might as well tell you the story. A long time ago, a man murdered his wife in that room, and her ghost haunts it. But these people were not ordinary. They were white all over, except for their eyes, which were red.”
