Another what car (Sorry)

I am hoping you guys/gals can throw some suggestions at me.
My parents are now looking for a new car after their old one was written off.
They want to spend around 5K tops and it has to be cheap to run/maintain etc and return a good mpg as they will be covering a fair few miles, I'm pretty sure they do enough miles to make a diesel viable so that would be good. Also has to be a 5 door.
I'm thinking along the lines of Yaris/Civic or something.
Its all very dull I know but if anyone has got any other ideas that wood be great
