Freelander TD4 Tyre change vibrations
Discussion
Guys,
My wifes Freelander had 2 new front tyres recently. The tyres were Michelin 225/55 R17's but the original supplied tyres are not made now but quick fit fitted the replacement which have a slightly different tread pattern.Despite tracking check and balancing the car vibrated through the steering wheel and through the whole car.2 Land rover dealers assessed.one said the offside drive shaft needed replacement and the other said it was the nearside driveshaft or might be the flywheel! There was also a noise like a humming/drone sound coming from the front drivetrain somewhere.
All very expensive to repair but which one is right?
Suspecting both views were wrong and to satisfy my curiousity, I changed the wheels front to back and presto vibration disappeared.Still have the drone noise particularly over 60 MPH but could live with that.I guess that could be caused by worn driveshafts or a wheel bearing.
The old tyres now on the front don't have much life in them and am concerned that when these need replacing I'll have the same problem again.
Any of you guys had the same problems.Any feed back would be much appreciated.
Cheers,Mark

You were running synchrones and now have lattitude tyres, right?
Im also needing new tyres for my td4 but oddly, my local kwik fit mob can still get the synchrone tyres..
You put the best tyres on the rear of a freelander, this helps keep the VCU working properly and lowers the chance of failure.
Is your whine constant at all speeds if so then its likely the front propshaft support bearings that are worn out, i just got mine replaced under warrenty, would have been £175 otherwise.
Maybe take it to a garage and have a full inspection done on it when you change the tyres over again if the vibrations continue.
I get vibs from my steering wheel but im hoping a change of 4 tyres and a full wheel alignment will solve it.
