Where and from whom to get a diamond ring valued from?
Discussion
Hi
I have a diamond ring which I want valued. I have a certificate which I received with the ring and also want to ensure the diamond matches the certificate. It doesnt have to be exact but more of a rough guide to put my mind at ease.
I dont want to send the ring off so would like to get it valued in person. Im in the London/Hertfordshire area so anyone have any recommendations?
Also how much does it cost?

What about getting just a diamond valued? During the run up to the first gulf war I found myself in Haifa in northern Isarael for a few days, this is apparently one of the main centres for diamond cutting so I had a nose round the factory, at the time everyone there honestly thought they were about to get nuk'ed, chem'ed, bio'ed etc and as such the currency had bombed out and the only money with any value was the $, and cash was king. I walked in got talking had a look at a few stones then bought a half carret normal round type stone which from what I can remember scored pretty highly in all catagories, I got more money off for being a serviceman, paying dollars cash, and it ended up costing me a couple of hundred quid, (and they even sent me a cheque for the VAT type element a few months later). I did have a certificate at the time but as with all things when mixed with house moves and general life over the years this is long since lost, I know at the time when a local jeweller looked at it he said he would have expected a nearer £500 wholesale or trade price but haven't a clue what it's worth now? Does the loss of the certificate make a huge difference? Would it now look like an illegal blood diamond with no paperwork to back it up?
The High St jewellers seem to be milking this service for all it's worth - many charging £50 an item or £25-£30 plus 1% of the value.
They dress the service up by adding things like a photograph and a certificate but you have to wonder just how many seconds each piece spends in front of the professional.
