It will be much easier if your 190 started as a petrol-engined model. It will be easier still if it is a 190 E 2.6, but then if it were, I doubt you'd be going to the trouble of an engine swap.

A very easy installation is the m103 12valve 3.0litre. This could be had as a 3.2 and a 3.4 from Brabus and AMG. Slightly harder would be the m103 24valve 3.0litre and the m104 24valve 2.8 or 3.2litre straight sixes. These latter are plentiful and cheap. Less than £1,000 should get you a good engine and 4 speed transmission. They give 220bhp and 220lb/ft which ought to brighten up a w201 no end. I don't suppose they would be any heavier on the gas.

The only problem with a 3.6litre from a C36 (not a C35) is that it is a relatively rare engine nad will be more costly.

All of these motors should bolt straight up. You will need to change the front springs and shocks. Those fitted to the 2.6 or D 2.5 should be OK for the purpose. I suspect also that only the 4speed transmission will fit. It might be fun to hook up the m104 3.2 with a close ratio manual box from a 2.5-16.
