I've been poking around with the door rearview mirrors on my US/Federal 1985 Series "1.5" 280i. The mirrors are those "free-standing", black plastic thing on the metal pedestals. The driver's/left hand side one won't move through the electrical controls in the vertical axis. The one on the passenger's/right hand side works fine. I tried supplying power directly to the connector coming from the mirror. I haven't thoroughly tested the connector connecting to the connector to the mirror. I'm actually not exactly sure how to do this.

There're couple of articles on the Web I've used for some help - and they've been helpful wink.

The mirror motor/actuator is made by IKU of Holland, now owned by Eaton. The part number is 2028055. I've been able to discover that this motor was used by quite a few Ferrari and BMWs of similar vintage to the 280is, and probably by quite a few other cars, too. I'm looking into sourcing a motor. Anyone have any more information on where to get some of these motors?

I don't know how to get the motor/actuator out of the plastic housing. Again, the mirrors are those free-standing, all black plastic things. They aren't the types fitted to the TVR-fabricated GRP farings, which would make things quite a bit easier since they appear to be easier to take apart to get to the motors. In a previous question I posted to this group about mirrors someone mentioned carefully (or not) prying the plasic "band" open around the center bit of the mirror, freeing the mirror center bit to pop out. It would be really useful, at least to me, to get a little more detail about this. Anyone know how these come apart, even if they do come apart, to get at the things inside? Anyone had these apart?

Thanks!

Hi

The motors/mech are the same in both types of mirors fitted to "Wedges"
In the non-pod type (The type you have) they are screwed on to the metal plate from behind the miror glass. The metel plate is then fitted in to the mirror body. In other wise you have to remove/break the glass to get at the screws.

The pod type undo from the rear so you have better access!

Again there are the same motors/mech.

Okay, so to be entirely clear, you're saying that I have to break the mirror to get to the motor?

Hi

Not if you are very careful. It just depends how stuck it is to it's mounting plate.

The mirror is glued to some part of the motor?

Hi

The mirror glass has a very good double sided tape/pad which attaches to a fixing plate which attaches to the motor!
You need to remove the glass from the plate to get at the fixing screws which go through the plate and motor to the main plate which attaches to the outside body!
If you don't understand what I mean I will take some pics at the weekend of some I prepared earlier!
