Porous Heads - Manufacturers fault?

I have a 2004 VW touran tdi. Its got a suspected Porous head.

Is this a manufacturing defect and if it is should the manufacturer pay for replacement? To me it sounds like poor quality materials were used in the first place.

The car has only done 85k miles - for a tdi this is very low.

The car is currently in with the main dealer and we are waiting for VWs response to this very question.

Sounds weird. Surely something made it porous? Otherwise it would have been like that from new and failed sooner?
