In the media you hear lots about retail and investment banks but the term merchant banks seem quite rare today. Are they still about and what do they do that distinguishes them from other types of bank?

I thought it was just generic rhyming slang for bankers in general.

Merchant Banks deal on the Equity, Bond, Commodities, Future and Options markets etc i.e. the "trading" side of banking - not the customer facing retail side as a rule but bank to bank deals.

Yes, Merchant banks are still around, and most retail banks have a merchant bank arm.
