My house mate and I are planning a Euro- Road trip this summer.

One of our days driving (500 miles) brings us out in St Tropez/Monaco.

We are taking a tent so ideally looking for a recommended but also fairly cheap campsite/hotel within about 20/30 miles of Monaco. We're not looking for a 5* place!

Port Grimaud - a water taxi ride across the bay from St Tropez has a great campsite (Camping de la Plage I think) where if you are lucky you can pitch your tent 10 metres from the beach. Advise you book in school & French hols though (July/August) - it will be hellish busy, particularly in August. We went in June and it was busy, but not to overbearing.

There are quite a few campsites a along this stretch of main coast road, so you have a fairly decent choice. The road is very busy at all hours though so try and pitch as far as you can from it.

We camped at Les Pinedes at La Colle Sur Loup up in the hills above Cannes/Monaco which had a pretty decent pool and was a blessed relief from the heat/noise of the coast. It was about 30 mins to Cannes, less to Nice and about 45min-1hr to Monaco and we did day and night trips to both.

Don't forget the Route Napolean which is a great drive for your journey back which starts just North of Cannes! We drove up it on our way home and also camped in Annecy, Chamonix then Reims.

Was a great holiday - two weeks and 3000km in a convertible with the roof down all the way too!

We stayed here last year for a week, pretty small place, we liked it http://www.rivesduloup.com/ - as above we preferred the peace and quiet away from the coast, whilst still being 20 mins away by car

Beware that the coast road to St Tropez is a nasty little bottleneck, so if you base yourself anywhere along it then you'll be sitting in traffic for most of the time whenever you need to get anywhere unless you leave early and return late.

I can also recommend this place http://www.lei-suves.com/content/gb/campsite/1/ up near Roquebrune Sur Argens, again far enough away for peace and quiet but a lot more amenities on site

Agree that early June is best to avoid the crowds

ETA - also make sure to take a road trip inland up to the Verdon Gorge area. The D952 from Castellane to M-S-M and the D957 were used in the Top Gear episode with the RS4

Try here, we have stayed twice. Not far to the beach.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks - campsite now booked.

Now I need to find a recommended campsite near the Nurburgring for the return trip!
